Great gift of high quality
Great starter ant farm for kids. It does not come with ants but we went to our backyard and scooped some up ourselves. It was easy to set up and made for a great gift for a 7 year old. Made of sturdy plastic and the tubing for connecting others together was quality too.

Excellent product!
We did an ant study in homeschool for my kindergartener and despite my fear of ants running loose in my house, this was an excellent addition to our study. The ants can’t get out - sigh of relief! - and seeing them work in person was well worth it!Much like all living things, if you fail to feed them and water them they die...and ours did. 😕We’ll be saving the farm for my additional 2 kids to use again in kindergarten when they get there!

Cute and small
If your looking for a big ant farm this isn’t it, it’s smaller. It’s cute though got it for my dad last year. He never ended up getting ants for it so I couldn’t tell you how it worked with ants.

The ants are fascinating, and then they die.
This is fascinating while the ants are alive. But it's hard to keep them alive and sad to watch them slowly die. They seemed to spend most of their time trying to get up and out of the thing. The small green one is fine, there is no need for special colors or larger ones. It's sort of a buy and die gift. It's sitting in the garage right now with a bunch of dead rotting ants in it.Ideally, you clean it out and buy more ants and try again with different food and water situations. But, keep in mind that it is a live pet that has to be maintained and fed.The harvester ants are very aggressive and try to escape, so an adult needs to do the inserting of the ants and the feeding. Kids just watch.

Education purposes is a plus, easy set up.
Bought this with the Nature gift story's harvester Ants. Smaller than I inspected but overall great education for my 8 year old brother. I live in California so I recieved my package and ants before the intended delivery date. Another plus is if you buy other ant farms you can attach the tube it comes with to attach if the option is given. Have the gel farm attached to this one. It also comes with 2 bags of sand. After the first one pour half the amount needed then proceed with the second bag. To pour the sand in the farm grab a piece of paper and roll it into a cone for ease.

A waste of time and money
My daughter, who is now 9 years old has wanted this ant farm for two years. I promised it to her as a condition of something she had to accomplish. I bought the ant farm at least a year ago, but only just recently ordered the ants. I looked in the packaging for information about how to get the ants. For a product that has been around since the 1950s I expect a lot more information and better customer service. I found an 800# to call, but was put on an endless loop and finally emailed them a question about the ants. It is unclear if one has to pay for the first set of ants or not. Nobody ever responded to my email, so since it was getting late in spring here in South Texas, I decided to pony up the $11 (most of that was for shipping) and get the ants ordered before the weather was too hot to mail them.Several weeks later, and still no reply to my original email, I got an email saying that my ants were shipping and to watch for them. So I received them, and waited until my daughter went to bed. The directions said to put the vial of ants in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to get them to mellow out so they don't give you a hard time when you put them into the ant farm. That's great, but our ants were going crazy, and they were running all over the counter. We put them back into the tube and kept them in the fridge for another 20 minutes. The problem with trying to put the ants into the farm is this - the ant farm has a narrow, approximately 1/2" wide opening, and the mouth of the tube vial is round. Don't you think after all this time they could have devised an easier way to get the ants into this frame? The ants don't just slide in there, they can walk up walls, so they will be fighting you as you put them into their new home that you paid for. Even in their refrigerated state, there were some ants that still did not want to cooperate. After getting the ants into the frame, we noticed that there were several ant "parts", heads, legs, etc. of ants that did not make it through their journey alive. The next morning I noticed that there were even less ants alive, and this week, less than four weeks after putting the ants in there, they are all dead. I did email the company the day after receiving my ants and telling them they were mostly dead, but I just saw that this email was kicked back to me because I mistyped the address. My bad. This address is: [email protected]. I had just tried to look for information on their website, which is either down or the company is out of business. My advice to you is to pass this up, it isn't worth the time or effort. I read several of the reviews just now and it looks like I'm not alone with my premature ant death. Go outside and find an ant hill to watch instead!

The classic... but small
I was shocked by how much smaller this is than the one I grew up with. We bought two and connected them, and that was better. This is otherwise the same as the classic, and better than those gel ant farms.

Joy to the child
My son is in love with this item. Me not so much, but he likes it a great deal. Worth every penny for the joy he gets from it and the numerous ant facts and information I'm bombarded with daily.

Nice, sturdy product that does what it is supposed ...
Nice, sturdy product that does what it is supposed to, comes with two bags of sand and some flexi tube for the ants to wander through. The harvester ants I ordered from antsalive.com have made it their home and work area and have transported a good portion of the sand from the bottom to the upper level. Glad these are still being made.

Great quality- fast shipping. Kids fill it with ants from the back yard, they never seem to go into the sand tho.

Easy set up
The ant farm was easy to set up. A code is provided for ordering the ants however it is only valid in the US and does not ship to Canada. This would have been useful to know beforehand.
