These rare pictures, both real and imagined, of relics, rituals, people, animals, and geometric shapes and designs provide much-needed material for collage and illustrations — material of the highest quality that is difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere. There are 25 full-page scenes of historic, natural, and city vistas that are ideally suited as background for collages and other projects. All of the pictures are sharply defined and clearly printed on one side of each page to allow for optimal use of their lines and textures and to eliminate the possibility of "show-through." The illustrations were chosen by the well-known collagist Jim Harter, whose work has appeared in The New York Times, New York magazine, and other publications. Mr. Harter's artistry is evident in his selection of images that — besides being useful as decorative or illustrative elements — have a strong visual impact and symbolic potential. Line engravings offer unique textural qualities, and as Mr. Harter writes, they "have a dream-like quality that other material cannot duplicate." Mr. Harter’s introduction gives a brief history of collage as well as instructions on techniques and materials and an overview of his own perspective on the art. To illustrate the various ways these nineteenth-century cuts can be used, six collages composed entirely of images from this book are included. Was worth the price I paid
Very happy with this. Many repeated images between this and other Harters/Dover clip art books but plenty I've never seen as well. Also has a good selection of some of Harter's collage works. Great addition to my collection.

Plenty of illustrations, large variety. Nice paper and printed on one side of the paper for cut and collage or whatever you need to do with the image.

Beautiful book.
This book was a great purchase. I reference it often when deciding how to assemble an ink drawing. This book has many examples of truly black and white images. Many ink books I've purchased contain images that are hard to view just because the whole image is the same tone. Ink is a difficult thing to master, thus making contrast even more important than it would be in any other form of drawing or painting. This book contains images that are full of contrast and are not in any way difficult to view.

a cd of the images would help
I owned this book before but lost the copy. It is great but a cd of the images would have made it easier to use the images. I use them in Photoshop so collage is not the primary use for this book. That's why the three stars instead of five.

Collage book
This book makes a fine collection to my book of arts. This helps you if you are into making art from images or imagination. They have samples in the book with images made out of many images found in the book. The cover of this book is made out of different images from the book, pretty much a copy and paste method. Detailed drawings black and white. Recommended for anyone who is into detailed ink art.

Decoupage Delight!
If you plan to do classic decoupage, this is the volume for you! Filled, absolutely filled, with tons of images, in all sizes and styles, of the 19th century decoupage craze. So happy with my purchase. This volume was even more than I hoped for...

Bom, mas um pouco vago
O livro até que é bom. Tem uma coletânea boa de imagens. Mesmo sendo bem aleatórias. Mas ele possui muitas páginas em branco. O verso de várias páginas não é utilizado. Achei estranho. Vale como uma referência geral. Mas há melhores exemplares de pesquisa do próprio Jim Harter.

Bad quality
Bad quality images, the images aren't very dark it looks like they been pocket scanned in, can't enlarge them to much. Great drawings and inspiration tho

Great resource book for mixed media artists.
The book is full of unusual imagery and has samples of how the images can be put together. Fun ideas and also an interesting look at images from a bygone era!
