Why does this watch require a lithium ion battery

with the ecodrive there isnt a required auxillary battery, if thats your question. As far as the type installed, im unsure but id assume lithium ion, so as to be readily rechargeable/durable per ecodrive functions.

What's the difference between the altitude scale on the dial, and the scale on the chapter ring?

The altitude scale on the dial reads out your altitude. The chapter ring scale allows you to measure change in altitude. Using the crown on top right, you twist the chapter ring so the white marker aligns with your current altitude. Then over time you can measure the +/- change by looking at whichever number on the ring the yellow needle is pointing to. On this version with the metric scale it's only useful up to 100 meters of variance. Also, the chapter ring can be used with the compass feature to set a bearing though it's harder to use in that way because it only shows NSEW.

Does this watch have illumination to be able to see the time when it is dark?

Yes the hour and minute hands, and the hour markers on the dial, are luminous. They glow through the night, not brightly but enough to tell the time. Put the watch to a light source beforehand and they will glow a bit brighter. The watch does not have a light, however.

How does the altitude hand transition from 9000' (large scale) to over 10,000' (small inner dial)?

The power meter indicates 0, 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000' altitude. So above 10,000, the power meter hand moves from "0" to "1" and altitude hands indicate as they do normally
