What gauge of wire to use to mount this across a 12 volt marine battery

Remember voltage is read ACROSS the battery and not in series-with. So across a 12v battery, mine draws 5 ma (0.005 A). Therefore, whatever awg automotive wire you have is FINE!, as it draws next to zero current. (thousandths of an amp). For automotive use, for an auto that’s driven regularly, one [might] choose to wire it always ON (fuse-box always on), so that you can see the battery voltage WHILE cranking., as if your voltage significantly drops during cranking, you know your battery is potentially BAD.

What is the length of the threaded section? Can it be mounted to a 1/2” thick wall?

yes, there about a 1/2 of an inch long, you can always us different screw types if they don't work for your application.
