Nostalgia IS sometimes what it used to be -- and even better the second time around!
I had a very pleasant surprise today, whilst waiting for a bus I popped into HMV and to my delight spotted this new release: 'Animaniacs: Volume 1'. Now, 'Animaniacs', which was produced by Steven Spielberg who was responsible for several other cult cartoons in the Nineties, was a show I used to love as a kid, but now at 26, I can appreciate it even more.Never a series that was completely pitched at children, now that I've grown I am finding myself enjoying the adventures of the Warner siblings Yakoo, Wakko and Dot as well as the other regular characters even more, and the countless parodies and references to all kinds of pop culture that went completely over my head the first time around. More of an animated variety show than you're standard, often predicable cartoon, this one was very clever and creative as well as witty. There's great shorts and there's lots of memorable music which was a big part of it, slapstick and parodies, catchphrases and running gags, cameos from other Warner Bros characters and celebrities, lots of adult humour, sometimes quite educational messages, slick animation - in short, a little bit of everything. I purchased this set, the first Region 2 'Animaniacs' DVD release I believe, to relive some of my childhood, but never expected to get this much enjoyment out of it.This is a 5 disc set and contains the first 25 episodes which were all broadcast originally in 1993. I was particularly pleased to find among them two that I used to really love as a kid, 'Bumbie's Mom', a send-up of 'Bambi' with Slappy and Skippy Squirrel which is comedy gold, and 'Home on De-Nile', a parody of Agatha Christie's 'Hercule Poirot' featuring a variety of the animated cast.Among the other great characters in the show who support the Warner siblings, who I have to admit I used to find annoying after a while (not so much now, but I still couldn't watch just their shorts back to back) are the aforementioned Slappy Squirrel (my personal favourite), a retired Hollywood movie star who frequently dishes the dirt on the stars, ambitious lab mice Pinky and Brain, who become so popular that they were subsequently given a show of their own, faithful friends Rita and Runt and the Good Feathers, all of whom appear in this collection. As a bonus feature there is ''Animaniacs Live!'' which consists of Maurice LaMarche who voiced the Brain character, interviewing the voice-over artists behind the Animaniacs via satellite as they talk about their career highlights, and this is as informative as it is entertaining. It occurred to me that these people who provide the voices don't receive the credit they deserve for their versatility and acting talents. This show was the 'Looney Tunes' of the Nineties and I am so glad to have experienced it again, nostalgia is sometimes what it used to be and, in this case, even better the second time around. As this is just 'Volume 1' I hope the second instalment isn't too far away because if memory serves, some of the episodes which followed after this set finishes were particularly strong. I think cartoon and animation lovers of all ages everywhere should experience some 'Animaniacs', so treat yourself today and see how timeless this is.

How long for volume 2!!!!

The UK gets shafted for so long, don't think this is forgiveness.
Finally, a proper UK release. As long as they release the rest of the volumes over here, I will buy them day one. Next time though, don't make us wait so long?

Still hilarious
My absolute favourite animation from that time. Big fan. Very funny still. Quality good, but maybe showing it's age a bit now. Reminded me of a very young Looney Tunes :) :)

Does what it says on the box
All good. Brings back memories. One CD did have some marks. Nothing otherwise to complain.
