One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters

As someone is has had an insatiable passion for reading and learning for more than 7 decades, my interests have ranged from the hard traditional sciences to the often strange and weird esoteric. This is why when I saw this 344-page soft cover book while browsing on Amazon, (One Mind: How our individual mind is part of a greater consciousness and why it matters by Larry Dossey, M.D.), I immediately decided to purchase it. Even though over the years I have read numerous books on this particular topic; nevertheless, I always learn something new and unique from the different approaches proposed by the authors writing about the mystery of consciousness and the universe. One of the many things I like about this book is that the author was scientifically trained as a medical doctor, combines this knowledge with philosophical and mystical ideas of the nature of consciousness. This book is organized into 4 parts covering a wide range of topics. Some of these include: “Saving others, one-mind experience, they moved as one, atoms and rats, mind beyond brain, immortality and near-death experiences, early oneness, healing and the one-mind, the dark side, the cosmic soup, is the one-mind God, love is the last word, expanding science” and many other informative topics. In conclusion I found this book to be an informative and entertaining read. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Season of the warrior: A poetic tribute to warriors).

Very enjoyable read, packed with evidence attesting to man’s innate supernormal abilities. Near-death and mystical experiences, telepathy, psychokinesis precognition, clairvoyance, collective dreams, and supernormal healings are among the topics covered at length. This is one of the best books I’m aware of that covers such a diverse array of topics in one volume. As such it serves as a great primer for anyone interested in seeing the evidence, especially for those that may be unfamiliar with these subjects.

“One Mind” is a piece that serves to promote and advance the idea that consciousness is non-local, ubiquitous and therefore singular. This refutation of current reductionist theory offers examples as varied as psi-experiments, NDE /STE literature, murmuration, twin studies, savantism and a host of other examples of “entanglement-in-process.” Dr. Dossey’s writing style is flowing, lucid, concise and yet, not devoid of personality; that is, this book’s pages are replete with fascinating facts & figures but it does not read like a sterile scientific tract. The recurrent theme of this piece is that there is no real difference between observed and observer, simply put: everything is connected to everything else. I hesitate to categorize this work as a “blow your hair back” offering, only because I’m more-or-less familiar with the topics covered (from other works) yet it is a very good, stand alone, impressive read. 4 stars on the board.

An excellent book by Dr. Dossey as his previous ones have been as well. For those of us who are convinced by intuition or revelation that the One Mind is Real, Dr. Dossey provides a mountain of evidence to support this theory. Skeptics and firm believers in the materialistic model of science may remain unconvinced of the Truth of the One Mind we are all a part of, but science is not infallible. It is a continuous process of refinement and correction of past mistakes. As Dr. Dossey rightly points out, we are now engaged in a societal transition from the materialistic model of science which has been in use for over three hundred years to the new emerging Energy Model based on spiritual truth and the findings of Quantum Physics which will supersede it in the coming decades and centuries. This kind of transition has occurred before in our history, e.g. from an erroneous flat earth view to a more correct round earth view, and will undoubtedly happen again and again as we gain a more correct perspective of our universe through the rediscovery of Truth once known to our Souls in the pre-ego era eons ago. Thank you, Dr. Dossey from bringing us one step closer to the Ultimate Truth.

"One Mind" is Larry Dossey's latest move in a crusade that has brought the evidence for nonlocal consciousness phenomena into the medical curriculum of an entire generation of students, from Harvard to the Mayo Clinic. And its greatest merit, in this reviewer's opinion, is the stark choice it leaves us with, especially as one grapples with the implications of Parts III and IV. There is no question that a conceptual shift such as envisioned by Dossey, in the tradition of Buddhism and other great spiritual practices, would require a fundamental restructuring of our sense of self, not to mention coming to grips with scientific and ethical questions that threaten to undermine some of our most cherished working models. However, persisting in the current dogma of materialism, separation and absolute objectivity is far more dangerous - and that is the point that Dossey makes with both passion and lucidity in this book. As with various systems of political and economic philosophy, history may have run its course on the postulates of Western Enlightenment, creating a world that is not only unsustainable and in great part morally bankrupt, but also scientifically wrong. The challenge is to find a way out - not only "how", but "how fast" are now questions of the greatest significance, and this book forces us to confront them, in particular the forces that slow down the natural evolution of the scientific process, our greatest instrument of change. As Dossey comments in a recent follow-up to "One Mind", paraphrasing Max Planck, "science progresses funeral by funeral". Unfortunately some of those funerals are brilliant minds swept in the rhetorical firestorm, who never get a chance to contribute to their full potential because of prevalent political fashions and self-censorship. There is nothing wrong with vigorous and factual debate: that is the essence of intellectual progress. But science should get out of the business of organized ridicule as a tool of academic suppression - that belongs to other value systems, not the one we are purportedly defending. If we are after the truth, then the only thing that should matter is data, and encouraging people with relevant ideas to put them up for public discussion. If we are after shaping the world according to a certain paradigm, then we should recognize this as a new world religion, burn our freedom of speech in its shiny incense holders and stop calling it science. We need more people like Dossey to carry this challenge effectively to the institutions that need to hear it, but ultimately it rests with those institutions to change their internal culture - or become obsolete. Today how we view mind and consciousness is in the process of radical change. The outdated and morbid perspective of materialism is being replaced by a view grounded in both spirituality and empirical science. The concept of the One Mind is not new but is grounded in all of the world's great religions and spiritual traditions. However, what is new is all the evidence coming from both the empirical sciences and behavior science that is both consistent and at the same time confirms the existence of a nonlocal universal aspect of mind. No one today can consider themselves as an educated individual who is not familiar with the conclusive evidence indicating that there exists a shared collective One Mind that people and animals routinely tap for super-mundane knowledge and experiences. Larry Dossey, MD in this book has compiled a very large number of concrete examples and data that would prove beyond any reasonable doubt to someone with an open mind that there exists a collective unconsciousness, One Mind, or Cosmic Mind that is the repository of all knowledge. If humankind is to survive and progress on this planet, it is crucial that we understand that the dogma of materialism is false and as human beings we need to understand and appreciate that our lives are all connected.

While I have read many books from Amazon these past ten years, this is the very first one that I feel compelled to review - so that others can get the same benefits I'm now enjoying. If you want to engender more peace, love and an overall awareness of what it really means to be human - order Dr. Dossey's book today. I have read this book twice now and cannot believe the changes that have started to happen in my life. I'm confronting my challenges on a more even keel - with a much deeper understanding of why we do what we do and the effects of our actions and how they impact the planet and our fellow humans. There are fascinating case studies that showcase a shared intelligence between humans that reminded me of the way flocks of birds all turn at the same time - as if they are all part of an invisible web of knowledge. Through One Mind - I now see and understand the universal connect between everything.

Being more of a believer in the One Mind than not, I was looking forward to read this book. Overall, I have enjoyed reading it, although I have skipped some content. Dr. Dossey is not missing, so it seems, even one legitimate piece of evidence to support and promote the notion of the One Mind and of the ex-science proofs of it. This is a very comprehensive catalog of all the known ex-scientific events throughout history. I do have some commnts: Pro: Comprehensive coverage of every aspect of the presence of the One Mind, from identical twins to Savants and Clairvoyants, Remote viewing and shared-NDE (that one was new for me). Advocacy of compassion in health care and in all interrelationships. The notion of Love as both a means and an end. Con: Maybe I had the wrong expectations, but being a comprehensive text such as this and not covering recent texts by scientists such as Roger Penrose (The Emperor's New Mind) and consciousness philosophers such as David Chalmers (The Conscious Mind), John Searle (Especially his long, public exchange with Daniel Dennet) leaves me a little surprised. No mention of the well known scientific theorem, that of John Stewart Bell, where Bell theorized, using only arithmetics, that there is no reality without non-local parameters. He was nominated for the Nobel prize in 1990, but passed away before he was even told about that. In general, I must have expected a more in-depth review of the available science effort in recent years to investigate Consciousness (there's an annual conference now, with a standing proposal to establish a science of Consciousness), and not only the always fascinating evidence of One Mind. Last, but not least, I'm really surprised at the total lack of any mention of Judaism and it's impact on the One Mind concept.

It's an amazing book that will challenge everything you know. The stories are entertaining and the information high quality. I almost highlighted the whole book. You MUST read it.

Como dicen los investigadores, "data is not the plural of anecdote". Un caso interesante de cada una de las experiencias paranormales no es suficiente para elaborar una teoría unificadora. Abarca demasiados campos y encuentro sus conclusiones no adecuadamente respaldadas. Es una especulación sin una estructura adecuada que la respalde.

Covers scores of research findings from great scientists. What now is needed is to synthesis of: collective unconscious, archetypes, morphic fields, holographic cosmic memory, implicate order, reincarnation etc.

There was such a broad source backing the mulitiude of points being made. The content I already wholeheartedly went along with and for me the manner of presentation seemed pleasant, clear and balanced and despite the breadth and complexity of the content it was a remarkably easy and light book to read.

The message of this book, is that we are all part of One Mind, therefore interconnected at all levels. Dossey's arguments are compelling, fully evidenced and referenced, and the perspective of the nature of reality he puts forward is very persuasive. His writing style is accessible, fluid and above all, engaging. I felt I could not put it down until I got to the end. I think it is a great read, and may open people's eyes to a more meaningful way of understanding life and living!
