Q: How leakproof is this? If I lay it on its side, will it leak? What if I throw it in a bag (e.g. backpack, messenger bag, etc.)?

I have two and I put coffee in one and water in the other. I then put them Inside my tote bag (no pockets). They do not leak!!!! You can lay them down, turn them upside down or shake them and they will not leak. Disclaimer: You must keep the top closed and the top must be screwed on correctly and tightly. Keeps liquids hot or cold for hours!!! Best travel cup ever!!!!!!

Q: Does anyone know what the difference is between this model with "Easy Clean Lid" and the previous model with "Open-Access Lid"? Which is better?

Easy clean lid is better but 1st seals used by mfg. squeaks when you go to drink. Don't know if mfg. changed to seals which don't squeak. Does anyone know if currently shipping Easy Clean Lid still squeaks when actuated to drink? Are Easy Clean Lids interchangeable between earlier earlier 20 oz stainless steel travel mugs?

Q: Just bought these and soaked tops in warm water, coffee still tastes like plastic/rubber will this go away?

We hand wash ours with dish soap and water, rinse thoroughly and then boil some hot water to blow out the top. This gets the crud out of the air holes under the lock. Now if I just had a replacement seal for around the lid, I'd be grand. I've had mine for about ten years...they definitely start to taste like whatever you put it in every day. With a daily rinse, it helps a ton. The plastic taste should go away rather quickly.
