Dream Wife

First things first: NO CLOSED CAPTIONS!!
In this day and age there is no reason for that except laziness!! Anyway, as for the film itself, it's certainly not one of Cary's best movies, but it IS Cary Grant, so worth a watch. Just don't expect a North By Northwest or Charade experience!! RP

Light-hearted entertainment
When I first viewed this movie, I turned it off within 5 minutes because it just seemed so silly. However, I'm glad I gave it a second viewing. It is a VERY silly movie, but also very funny! Unexpectedly, I laughed out loud more than once. Grant's character learns that a "dream" wife is just that...a dream! Realistically, the love of a confident, accomplished woman balanced with meeting his needs is more dream-y and desirable. If you are searching for some light-hearted entertainment, try this film out!

The Dream Wife movie with Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr is fun to watch!
We saw this movie on television the other day for the first time ever and really enjoyed it so I wanted to surprise my husband with this movie for our personal collection. You can't go wrong with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr!

HARD TIMES IN HOLLYWOOD
In the early 1950's, the big Hollywood studios were in deep trouble. People stayed glued to their 10 inch television screens, refusing to go to the movies. Hollywood tried everything. Cinemascope. Vistavision. Stereophonic Sound. Even 3-D. Nothing worked. It must have been difficult, too, for an ageing actor like Cary Grant to find good parts. In 1952, one year before making "Dream Wife," he did a picture called "Monkey Business" with Ginger Rogers and Marilyn Monroe which (let's face it) helped nobody's career. Now Cary is Clemson Reade, a traveling salesman engaged in a big business deal in a country called Bukistan. (By the way, if you're wondering what language Eduard Franz, who plays the Khan of Bukistan, is speaking at the beginning of the picture, it's no language at all; just total gibberish.) There he meets a princess named Tarji ("And Introducing Betta St. John." Beware of those words "And Introducing"...they usually mean that a movie actor's career is over before it even started). Since she was a girl, her entire training in life has been centered on pleasing her future husband. Clem is impressed, and attracted. The only problem is he's already engaged to Priscilla Effington ("Effie" to you), played by Deborah Kerr. She works at the state department and is not exactly a 1950's housewife. When Clem returns, he finds the government in the middle of an "oil crisis." It looks like the wedding will have to be postponed (again). Clem has had enough. What is wrong with you, Effie? Don't you understand the job of a 1950's wife? You're supposed to clean the house, do the dishes, make dinner, and raise the kids. Everybody knows THAT. He ends the engagement, and sends a cable to Tarji in Bukistan, saying that he wants to marry her. At first, her father disapproves, but later relents, and the two of them (together with all the servants) arrive in America. The problem is that the wedding will not take place for three months, and during that time Clem is not even allowed to kiss his future bride. Even worse, Effie has been given the job of chaperoning the two of them! Now, the movie is entertaining as far as it goes, and Grant and Kerr work well together, but it's also quite silly. And it was a flop at the box office. Cary Grant announced that he was retiring from acting, but I guess Alfred Hitchcock must have changed his mind. In 1955, he returned in "To Catch A Thief."

Hard to Find
Order this because my wife thinks it's one of Cary Grant's best movies! After years of trying to find a DVD copy, we found Amazon had it (was only on VHS just a year ago). This copy is of fair quality, but the audio goes from loud to quite, with sudden drops in the volume throughout the movie (one drop lasted several minutes). As far as the movie goes it's 2 stars at best. I'd never seen the movie before, so we bought it...and besides I'm a big Cary Grant fan so why not get it? Now I know why it's never on TV. The movie is slow, and not at all engaging, it just never comes together to pull you into the plot. However it does have Cary Grant did I say that. As far as being funny (it's supposed to be), I didn't find very many laughs, I may have been amused once or twice at best. Thumbs down on the quality of the DVD, and the Movie!

Grant and Kerr Great Team
Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr obviously respect and like each other as actors. That comes through very clearly. They have fun in this film, and thus so does the viewer. Very good comedic acting by Grant, and Kerr is excellent in every mannerism and expression.

Enjoyable rom-com with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr
Cary Grant is frustrated with high-powered fiancee Deborah Kerr who works at the US State Department and is very focussed on her job. During a business trip to fictitious oil exporting Bukistan, he meets a beautiful and submissive princesse, brought up in a patriarchal society. Marriage to such a woman suddenly seems very attractive. Complications ensue when relations between the US and Bukistan necessitates top level involvement from both sides. It sounds absurd, but is genuinely funny. For sure a good script to begin with, but what elevates this movie are the two comedic stars Cary Grant and (surprisingly to me at least) Deborah Kerr. They have excellent chemistry and wonderful timing. See it for some light-hearted and sweet romance & comedy. The only downside is that the sound is in some places a bit iffy, but it does not detract from the film,

Love the movie!
Fabulous early rom-com comedy style movie. Classic Cary Grant and they sure don't make them like this no more! I laughed and got caught up in the fun. Only thing that lets it down a bit is the quality, it's watchable, definitely, but is not fantastic and the movie deserves a lot better.

An out of date 30s screwball comedy made in the 1950s.
This is not a movie. It is Deborah Kerr's first opportunity to work with Cary Grant. She is quite attractive in this film, but there is nothing in the story to engage the audience. It might have contemporary relevance in terms of Iranian women relocating to the West and finding companionship with Western men. Apart from that, you can see why Grant retired after this film. He was still making the sort of screwball comedies of the 30s which were out of date even in the 40s. He had moved on in his film career like James Stewart who went into Westerns and Technicolor films. It would take Alfred Hitchcock two years later to launch Grant into the Technicolor era with 'To Catch a Thief'. There's no question about it, Hitchcock got the best out of Grant to immortalise him on screen. The sound quality dips about 25 minutes into the film, but then rights itself about ten minutes later.

Dream wife
Das 2 solche Superstars einen solchen Film drehen ist unvorstellbar. Kitschiger geht es nicht, der schlechteste Film von Cary Grant den ich je sah.
