Not to slow if you set up properly. Nice clean water is worth it for me.
Bought this filter a couple weeks ago to remove fluoride and replace my fridge filter which is expensive and leaves a strange taste in the water and the company will not do anything to resolve the issue. It is slow to filter. However the water has no strange taste and is worth it. This was my experience; I washed the pitcher and blue insert and lid and laid the lid on a clean plate while I rinsed the filter for two minutes as directed.I also gently scrubbed the filter for about 45 seconds or so toward the end of rinsing. The filter comes with a wing nut and rubber gasket. I placed the gasket on the filter then placed it into the blue reservoir and used the wingnut to attach it to the reservoir. At first the water came out of the side of the hole in the filter - between the wingnut and the bolt. Some reviewers warned about over tightening the wingnut but that seems off since that wouldn't block the filter hole. So I tightened it pretty hard but I am female ;). After that the water came out of the actual hole in the filter. Now about the slow filtering; At first yes the first batch took overnight to get through the filter so I scrubbed the filter again gently for about 30 seconds and that did the trick. I think if you allow the new filter more time to absorb water the second scrubbing will allow the surface to become a bit more porous. Now it drips out a lot faster. Still 10 times slower than the brita but because it is actually filtering the water. Take a about an hour and a half to fill the pitcher which is around 6 cups. I fill a gallon glass pitcher with a spout and keep that filled up in the fridge. Works great and water tastes like nothing which is awesome and I did throw out the first two batches of water. I love it. Hope this review helped you out. As I spent hours reading reviews trying to figure out what it would be like to purchase a $70 filter and have it not work.

Good Filter for Bad Water
This is the filter pitcher you want if you think you're ever going to have to drink water from some kind of dubious source - well, stream, the brown tap water in a town that shall remain nameless. It's also the filter pitcher you want if you want to remove fluoride and/or herbicides. In short, this is not just a filter for taste system. It's more like the Berkey in a smaller package that costs less. It is plastic (BPA-free), so if you don't want to have your water sitting in a plastic pitcher, you can dispense into a glass container immediately after filtering. My tap water is really good, and I have a Zen Water system to filter and remineralize our drinking water. It has a ceramic filter similar to this one, but it does not remove fluoride. Since the Propur, like the Zen, imparts some minerals into the filtered water, I have been re-filtering Propur water through my Soma Carafe to remove some of the minerals before running it through my coffee maker. I also use the Propur water in anything I am going to boil water for. And I make my son drink it. My husband and I grew up on fluoridated water, and it's probably just fine. But I don't think it NEEDS to be there, and I'd just as soon my son just have his fluoride on his teeth instead of in various places that we know it doesn't do any good.Taste is a personal thing, so I like the Zen water and will be continuing to drink that (especially filtered again through the Soma - it's delicious). The taste from the Propur filter is also really good, but the water is a bit more expensive per gallon (the Zen filters will do about a thousand gallons).Whether you pick this or the Zen or the Soma is going to depend on where you live, what's in your water, and what you need. I live in a city with good tap water, but my kid's needs are different from mine, so I have a place for all three systems. If your water is really bad, or if you are concerned about fluoride, you should use this or a Berkey (if you've got the money to buy the thing, the cost per gallon is supposedly really good). Even if you have really good tap water, I would suggest buying one of these and an extra filter just in case you have a natural disaster or something. Honestly, you can't be too careful.

The ceramic filter element is excellent
I have a Berkey, which I love, but I needed something smaller and less expensive to take on a long trip. I didn’t have a lot of confidence in the other pitcher filters I looked up, and this seemed to be most similar to the Berkey. I was a little nervous at first because it took all day to filter the first fill, and half a day to filter the next one. By the fourth or fifth time I filled it, however, things were moving at a much better rate. The primary thing I love about it is that the water (which currently comes from a very hard and heavily chlorinated source) comes out tasting great, and I trust that it’s been well filtered. If you are planning to use this the way it seems to be presented, as a pitcher you fill from the top and pour directly from, you might be disappointed. I knew going in that other reviewers had difficulty pouring clean water into a glass without a bit of unfiltered water dripping in. Also, I go through way more water in a day than a single pitcher can accommodate, so my strategy has been to pour the filtered water into a larger dispenser and refill the chamber a couple times a day. Might be slightly inconvenient to some, but it’s perfectly fine for me; especially since it means i have plenty of good tasting, clean water on hand wherever I go.
