Rather flat as it should be.You use it to hone a sharpening stonr so it obtains a flat surface before you start sharpening a blade.This specimen is rather small, but can still be used to flatten standard stones. You should be using it to give a new stone a flat face (none of them is flat out of the oven), and then every time you use a sharpening stone you should kiss it just enough to remove the groves and dips your blade wore into the sharpening stone.A full size flattening stone is expensive, A precision ground stone is very expensive.This one is of excellent quality and is just large enough to do the job.

Excellent product. Except its size...great for my little slip stones and it works wonders in flattening the bevels on my double bit ax. Now if I could get a larger one...perhaps circular? About 3-1/2 inches would work for me.

Work the old stone with plenty of water. To bring an old stone takes quite a bit of work. But does the trick.
