Very special writing
As someone who lived in the U.S. south for thirty years or so, I at first thought such experience might be a prerequisite for appreciating this book. Now my thinking is that at least some people everywhere will find something of value here, provided they're not looking for light or escapist reading. For many of us, Carson McCullers' unflinching storytelling will not only resonate but provide a narrative which lends itself to savoring in small daily doses. You may find surprises along the way- unexpected turns of phrase and observations which may elicit a chuckle or have you thinking "whoa- let me look at that again." Meanwhile, the stories move logically and hang together. A note of caution: these stories take place in the 1940's or so and you may have noted my reference to McCullers' writing as unflinching- so if you are deeply offended at the sight of the "N-word," you may want to leave this one on the shelf.

Feel of the pages, readable print
These books are special: the paper quality, the lightness, the little silk bookmark. I've bought four of these books; they are keepers. Cherish them!

This book is in A-one shape!
I ordered it on the tenth and it arrived in 3 days. The appearance for a used, but graded as very good book, was even better than I expected. I love it when used books are taken care of. I am a totally satisfied customer & I can't wait to dig in, curl up and enjoy the great books written by Carson McCullers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this book and I would gladly reorder another selection from them again.

a beautiful Library of America collection
Carson McCullers completed her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, in the year I was born.I have been reading her for more than five decades; and she has kept on deepening, deepening.¶ this Library of America collection of her novels is a treasure and a bargain.¶ some compare her to other literary stars. I do not. for me she has become incomparable.¶ I do have a favorite among her titles -- the last one, Clock Without Hands. I am thinking about that now, that image, that telling vision.¶ she did not live the short happy life of a Francis Macomber; she suffered long and hard, and did not go easy. read her, read her; maybe somewhere somehow she will see and smile.

This is the standard.
McCullars is enjoying a resurrection, of sorts, and this is an affordable collection of her most famous works. The binding is sturdy and the text is clear.

Where Are the Other Stories in "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe"?
See title.Per Wikipedia, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe contains the following stories, "Wunderkind," "The Jockey," "Madame Zilensky and the King of Finland," "The Sojourner," "A Domestic Dilemma," and "A Tree, a Rock, a Star," in addition to the eponymous novella. But nowhere are they found in the said story!Has anyone else noticed this? The Library of America edition of an author does NOT contain ALL the works of an author???

Great Editions
The Library of America Hardback edition books are great value: They normally contain a number of stories by the author; sometimes essays; and sometimes autobiographies. They have quality binding, with acid free paper, and offer work by a number of very important writers. Along with the Everyman's Library Classics Editions - they are my favourite book editions.

Genius, must read
Should be required reading, along with Salinger and Hemingway. I missed it in my youth, read it now, loved it. My teenage daughter is enjoying it, too.
