The Cloverfield Paradox

Not perfect but better than what I've been hearing
This review is for the Blu-Ray edition of 'The Cloverfield Paradox' released on February 5, 2019.I thought this movie was better than all the negative reviews and not quite as good as the great reviews. I really think this is 3 to 3 1/2 star movie but I'm going to bump it up to 4 stars simply because I was never bored while watching it. I believe that if the title didn't have the 'Cloverfield' name attached to it that it would get better critical reviews. For those who are looking for monster action, there is a monster but you are probably going to be disappointed and I'll leave it at that. For more on this read below in the 'Spoiler' section.WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO MY FRIENDS?: Sure why not? Especially if they are into Sci-Fi or the 'Cloverfield' franchise in general. It might get a bit weird for people who are not into science but even though the theories behind the science are complicated, the movie let's you still enjoy it even if you are not well versed in science.WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR THIS MOVIE COME FROM? It came from a writer who wrote the basic story back in 2008-2009. I don't believe it originally had anything to do with the 'Cloverfield' franchise. J.J. Abrams, the producer, thought that this movie could lead to some interesting possibilities for the franchise in the future due to it's parallel universes and also with the potential for time travel.PLOT/SUMMARY: Normally I give a detailed synopsis for old movies but for new movies I don't go into too much detail. To say anything more than a brief line or too would just ruin it for someone who is looking to watch this movie.I'm going to keep this very simple. A group of scientists and astronauts are aboard a space station, 20 years in the future. The earth will run out of energy in 5 years if nothing is done. The idea of the station is to use a particle accelerator to create infinite energy for earth. The downside risk is that some people believe that this device can open up a way into the multi-verse or parallel universes. This could cause untold chaos. Well you can probably figure out by the title who was correct. On earth, the boyfriend of one of the astronauts is trying to make contact with her. That's all I'm going to say about that. For some details, look in the 'Spoiler' section below.*****LOTS OF SPOILERS BELOW*****Do not read below this point if you don't want to know what happens in this movie. The rest of this review goes into some of the details of the movie.HOW DOES THIS TIE IN WITH THE PREVIOUS 'CLOVERFIELD' MOVIES?:-The only obvious tie-in occurs in the final seconds of the movie. So if you are patient, you will see the connection. That said, it's a cheap tie-in. Basically it looks like the final scene was tacked on just so they can give the movie name brand recognition and make it part of a 'universe'. The name pretty much guarantees that you will have an audience that you might not otherwise get.-The scenes on earth are mostly of a man, Michael, trying to make contact with his girlfriend who is on Cloverfield Station. While this is going on an attack occurs comes from an unknown source. This obviously relates to the previous movies. The earth appears to be under attack while he is trying to reach her. At one point Michael goes out and rescues a girl. He takes her to an underground shelter. The same sort of thing happens in '10 Cloverfield Lane'.-There is also a scene in which you see the shadow of what appears to be a giant creature, obviously the 'Cloverfield Monster'.Other than that, I haven't really done any research on the internet to see how else this ties in.DID I LIKE THIS MOVIE? As I said at the top, I was never bored. I was really looking forward to the 'Cloverfield' tie in but I was more than a little disappointed. Overall, I'd have to say that I lean slightly more toward liking this movie rather than disliking it. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd call it a 6 to 6 1/2.THIS MOVIE WAS A BIT CRAZY, DID THIS MOVIE GO TOO FAR?: Yes, I think this movie went way too far with some things.OK, SO THEN WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS I HAD WITH IT?:-The whole bit with the arm was just too much. I know they were looking for a bit of comic relief but it was out of place in this movie. I don't care how many universes there are, a living arm with a brain isn't going to be in any of them.-The arm writing a message was just plain campy.-OK, I get what they were trying to do with the mixing of the universes but I think it was just not realistic to stick the gyro in the Russian's body. I can live with the girl getting stuck in the wall, At least you can say she materialized there. The gyro in the body is way too far of a reach.-Gordon's death was stupid also. I can understand the magnetic field bit but liquid metal grabbing him and then pulling him back? This is just stupid. If the metal would have just gone through him, I would not have a problem with this scene.-I'm no physicist but I felt that they got back to their own universe way too easily. The whole ship falls apart and then they just hit a button and everything is fine? Typical Hollywood.-I'm no expert in parallel universes but I have to believe that either things would be exactly the same or they would be completely different. After billions of years of evolution, I doubt that just a few minor differences would have occurred between the universes. If there were to be even the slightest altering of any event on earth it would lead to drastic differences. This idea has been explored many times over the year's in science fiction in movies, television, books and magazines.I think I should stop with the criticism. I feel like I'm talking myself out of giving this movie 4 stars!!!HOW ABOUT THE EXTRA'S? IS THERE ANY ADDED VALUE THERE? There are a few extra's. You get a 'Making of' featurette and another featurette called 'Shepard Team: The Cast'.CONCLUSIONS: Ultimately, I think this movie is worth a watch, especially if you liked the previous 'Cloverfield movies'. You might end up being disappointed but you won't be bored and the story itself is fairly interesting even if it treads on ground that has been walked on before. I wouldn't believe the one star reviews but I wouldn't trust the five star reviews either. Somewhere in between is probably where this movie's value lies. I suspect the reviews might be a little bit better if it didn't have the 'Cloverfield' name tied to it. Then again, it probably wouldn't get as much publicity or views if it didn't have the 'Cloverfield' name tied to it.So let's call it 3 1/2 stars which I'm rounding up to 4.

Great Prequel with Answers
This movie is a great addition to the Cloverfield movies. While Cloverfield Lane took place around the same timeline as Cloverfield, this movie starts before the start of Cloverfield and reveals the how the creatures showed up without warning. Still needs a Cloverfield 2 if we are going to find out the outcome.

Interesting, fun and intense. My favorite of the three!
This is my favorite of the 3 Cloverfield movies. It explains why the previous Cloverfield events/movies happened. Problem is, a lot of the people who watched it, didn't watch closely enough and are giving bad reviews, stating that it doesn't make sense. It does make sense if you pay close attention!First of all, the particle accelerator they are using is 1000x more powerful than any previously ... not 2x, not 100x. Particle accelerators are not to be trifled with. Even current ones unleash forces we don't completely understand. That creates the perfect explanation of why chaos is released in 'Paradox'. They even state in the movie that TIME and DIMENSION could be affected. Now if you can't accept that a particle accelerator that is 1000x more powerful than any previously could create rips in time and dimension, I can't help you. Because you're not accepting that this is a sci-fi movie and you're still trying to understand it with today's technology.Another complaint I see from reviewers is that the crew is immature and a real space crew wouldn't act like that. My argument against that conclusion is that the reviewers are not taking into account how desperate things are on Earth. There are severe food and energy shortages, countries are at each other's throats, plus, they are running out of time to do anything about it. The crew is under severe pressure. It's not a stretch for me to believe that the crew, made up of citizens of different countries, might the same pressure and could very well be at each other's throats in space.I'd encourage everyone to turn on captioning when watching movies. It helps you get all the details in the dialog. It was great fun and one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen in a long while. Intense and suspenseful soundtrack too!

Meh
I really enjoyed the 2 previous Cloverfield movies, but this one looks more like an above average SyFy production. I think it went straight to video. It's basically a generic Sci-Fi production with a Cloverfield'ish ending tagged onto it.

The Cloverfield Trifecta
THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX is the latest chapter of the CLOVERFIELD series of films that started with the film of the aforementioned name in a 'found footage' format that I don't usually go for, but CLOVERFIELD was excellent with a great monster. The second chapter, 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, was thought-provoking sci-fi ala 'The Twilight Zone' or "The Outer Limits" and told of a possible alien invasion and the devastating personal circumstances re 3 people. This well done film echoes the others and ties things up nicely whule throwing a few "red herrings" our way. BD is sharp as a tack!!! I strongly recommend all 3 films in this group-- they don't all necessarily relate directly to each other, but the reasons they are called by the CLOVERFIELD name will be quite apparent. Highly recommended.

Cloverfield Uinverse
I got this primarily because I have the other two films. So firstly this does link the other two films to a cloverfield universe (which incidentally was a working title for this latest film). The earth is suffering a major energy crisis, conspiracy theorists fear that in finding a solution to this crisis would lead to the “Cloverfield Paradox” creating and opening portals to parrel universes. This thus happens: Earth vanishes. It is confusing. However, I think many of the negative reviews have occurred simply because the script causes many viewers to scratch their heads and mumble to themselves in confusion, many stories running against each other. It’s interesting. I enjoyed the film. It was better than Cloverfield, but not as good for me as 10 Cloverfield lane, although I loved the ending! I am definitely glad I have got this film, and I suggest that others view the film with an open mind rather than listening to the many negative reviews.

Yet another great addition to an ever growing Universe of Mind blowing proportions!!
After watching Cloverfield I was instantly taken with the narrative and uniqueness of the story telling used as this type of story hadn't really been told in the first person format before, however after watching 10 Cloverfield Lane I had officially come to love this franchise and was eager with anticipation as to the vastness of the potential this story offered for future additions and the opportunity J J Abrams had created for a much wider universe. With all of this in mind The Cloverfield Paradox delivers and then some! Having watched the previous 2 additions there was still a lot of unanswered questions I had regarding where the creatures (Aliens) had come from and why they were here! I am now no longer officially left wondering these things! This addition not only adds to the already existing popular franchise, however it also takes it in a whole brand new and exciting direction! not only does it answer all previous questions I had, but it does it in a very subtle and clever manner!I would draw parallels with the Matrix Franchise with regards to how cleverly Abrams has thought out the franchise as it is clear he knows where he is headed and as such no little detail is left untouched. Although this film is far from an easy watch it is necessary to link the previous films into the world in which they stand as well as the time lines in which they are happening. This is not a film to watch if you are just wanting an easy watch, however if you love a challenge like myself then these films are definitely for you!Overall I would give this a solid 10/10 and if you love the previous 2 additions to the franchise like myself and crave more then this is definitely not one you'll want to miss!

My only gripe
My only gripe with this movie is I wish it went on for longer than 11/2 hours. The story is there and is great in all its forms but you have to dig around for it without it being obvious. I would of liked to see some sort of dimension where you could see and be in the 'horror' of a alien dimension where 'demons' exist, but this movie like all the other Cloverfield movies leaves you wanting more, giving you only a snippets of what might come (whatever that will be) next in the next installment of the Cloverfield chain. This movie is definitely a taster of things to come.

Great
The products that I ordered were great, but the delivery driver put them through the wrong door. I was in and they could easily have put the items through my letter box instead of my neighbors. So all in all happy with what I had ordered, but not happy with how they were delivered.

Its personal!
This NETFLIX production received many a poor review, as did Annihilation, also a NETFLIX production. The latter has rightfully, gone on to receive the credit its due. Personally, I really enjoyed this movie, and the link between the other 2 Cloverfield movies is fine. All 3 Cloverfields are very different. People will always find fault but its personal preference and though not perfect, it fits into franchise quite nicely.
