A mining operation in Colombia opened a window into an unknown period of the earth's history-where a world with giant creatures emerged. The biggest of them all was Titanoboa-a 43-foot snake, the largest that ever lived. New discoveries suggest that Titanoboa's rule was challenged by a giant crocodilian. Experiments reveal unmatched hunting prowess. So which one was the apex predator 58 million years ago?

Snakes Versus Crocodiles 58,000,000 Years Ago!
After the dinosaur extinction 65 million years ago, what animals took their place as the top predators? For one answer, paleontologists visited the gargantuan open pit coal mine of the Cerrejón Mining Company in Columbia, South America. There, in 2003, they uncovered a Paleocene freshwater turtle as big as a car. This turtle, who lived about 8 million years after the dinosaurs, has giant bite marks on its carapace. What in the world had a jaw that big? Would you believe a Mega Croc? But was the Mega Croc the top of the hill? How about a 43 foot-long snake? Could a Titanoboa best a crocodile? The Narrator tells us: "All the evidence indicates that whenever snakes and crocodiles hunt in the same quarters, it ends in conflict. Right now, the Florida Everglades have a problem with illegally released Burmese pythons taking on the indigenous crocodiles."Get ready for astounding video, as well as experiments on the strike force of a snake, the bite strength of a crocodile and how wide a Titanoboa could have opened its mouth.Very interesting stuff. Commentators include Jonathan Bloch (Florida Museum of Natural History), Alex Hastings (Virginia Museum of Natural History), Jason Head (Museum of Zoology, University of Cambridge), Aldo Rincon (University of Florida), Paul Sereno (University of Chicago), Greg Erickson (Florida State University), Kristen Hart (US Geological Survey) and David Pennin (University of Louisiana, Lafayette)."Graveyard of the Giant Beasts" first aired in November, 2016. The episode is a little less than 60 minutes. The DVD offers the options of watching it with English subtitles, or with DVI (Descriptive Video).
