Well done!
I don't write reviews often but wanted to share some thoughts on this one. I rented it from IFC VOD a while back and found the picture quality to be pretty great. Colors are fairly drab but the detail and depth of image were top notch. First off why anyone would watch a foreign film dubbed is beyond me. The only way to see this film o'natural with the subs, it's not a dialogue heavy film anyways. Second the meaning of the glimpses of the little girl are clearly understood by the end of the film. I gave this 4 stars because I was disappointed that the twist was too predictable too early in the film and I agree with the other review that the film start was awkward and slow. The movie paid off after it got past the first 20 minutes and really added a nice finishing touch in the last few minutes of footage that we see when the credits finish. It was not supremely scary but was very unique in some of the filming techniques used to create several of the scenes and certainly had it's creepy moments. I don't know why the U.S. is getting the shaft with this release on DVD and no Blu-ray like the UK but I'll be buying a copy regardless as this is a worthy film to own for any horror fan and certainly worth a rent. Just be sure you watch it with the Spanish audio track and stay tuned until the credits are done rolling.

Eh...
After watching and really enjoying the American remake with Elisabeth Olsen, I figured I would check this one out to do a comparison. I can say with absolutely no resolve that the remake was infinitely better than the original.By and large, the plot doesn't make a lick of sense whatsoever. The motive of the 'antagonist' is different from the remake, and the motive itself is extremely vague and I still can't wrap my head around what was supposed to be the 'driving force' of the killer. There are also countless moments where you tilt your head to the side and say to yourself, "huh?" due to odd behavior exhibited by the central character, such as *SPOILERS* the opening sequence where the girl and her father trek through high grass and fences to reach the titular house, when you see just moments later that there is a paved road that the 3rd character drives up to on the opposite side of the building. Or just discovering her father bloody and unconscious and without missing a beat, for no discernable reason, spends the next lengthy amount of time meticulously searching and inspecting every nook and cranny on the floor for SOMETHING, as if the ordeal with her dad never happened. Why? Who knows. The climax of the film? I don't really know. I CAN say that it did not involve any sort of sexual abuse of the central character in her childhood like in the remake. Other than that, I can't make sense of it. What little sense it DOES make doesn't make her the likeable 'anti-hero' that Elisabeth Olsen pulled off, but more of a psychotic/schizophrenic woman who has gone off her rails.I watched it, then shelved it until my next yard sale. Save yourself the time.

Very eerie film.
This is a very unique horror film. There are no cut from one camera to another switch frame and no angle changes. The film consists of a father and daughter arriving at a new home to fix up for them to live in. All hell breaks loose after someone or something starts hunting them. I have never seen a film made the way this 1 was made. It is a truly creepy film and the end will blow your mind. Check this 1 out

Very Creative
If you are a fan of suspenseful thrillers then you will enjoy this film. Plays much to the same audience as session 9 and films built on atmosphere and tension. I am a big fan of paranormal activity< the sequels, and other suspenseful films where you often hear more than you see.

Incredibly Unnerving!!!
This movie was incredibly unnerving. I am rarely caught off guard by any horror movie since I have been watching since a young age, and The Silent House really surprised me. What a well acted, simple but somehow complex plot.

Curiosity
The main reason I purchased The Silent House (original title La Casa Muda) was curiosity, in as much as wanting to see how this film (which was filmed in one continuous shot and in real times) looked. It is based on a true incident – or so we are told.It occurred to me early on in the film that there were likely to have been edits and on reading about the film, I then find out that it was shot over four days (if that is correct) and that there was no evidence to support it being based on a real incident (if that is also correct). So I might have bought the film on a false premise but I enjoyed it all the same so no real harm done – and they wouldn’t be the first to say a film is true when it is not (Fargo for example – Joel Coen has stated that their story was completely made up)It is a low-budget production but it has been done very professionally and with competent actors giving convincing performances. The camera work is particularly good and especially so since there are a number of mirrors and reflective surfaces in the house when the filming takes place. On the back of the case it is described as “One of the most intense, frightening and horrific films in modern horror” – but I would say it is actually more a film of suspense rather than of horror. So whether it is in one continuous shot or not, I don’t know but it was an enjoyable enough hour-and-a-quarter of entertaining suspense for me, but not one that I would be in a hurry to watch again, hence the three stars. On the DVD you get:The Silent House filmScene SelectionSet-up: Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital; English Subtitles On/Off; German Surround Dolby Digital; German 5.1 Dolby Digital; German Subtitles On/OffTrailer

Much Ado About Nothing
!!!WARNING. CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!Wilson and his daughter Laura have been employed by a friend Nelson to clean his property so he can sell it. However, once inside, Laura starts to hear strange noises and her father goes upstairs to investigate. There is a loud noise and a cry and suddenly Laura is alone in a house of horrors. Or is she? This interesting horror film from Uruguay has really divided my opinion. I thought the near silent majority of the film, with a mounting sense of dread as Laura investigates the house and its secrets, was beautifully handled. The film was at this point building up nicely towards a nerve jangling climax. Then came the ending. Oh dear. It's not as if I didn't like the intentions of the ending, as the ideas behind it were fine. It was just the execution of said ending that left so much to be desired. As a previous reviewer has mentioned, this opens up gaping plot holes and sublimely scary sequences such as Laura taking the flash photography are thus made redundant. It's not a lame duck ending, but it does render past events pretty redundant.A great shame as there was much to enjoy along the way. Still, La Casa Muda is worth investigating and the director clearly has a great future ahead of them, as the film is extemely well shot, and there are genuine 'jump out of your seat' moments throughout its running time. However, I can only award the film a disappointing 3 out of 5 due to the nonsensical conclusion.

Boredom with scattered instances of scares
This is the movie that purports to be all shot in one take. That's right - the whole movie is done in one continious take, like Russian Ark. If it all was done for real, it must have been damn difficult to pull off. But, there are a few places where the director could have easily cut and edited so that that it seems continious and if you ask my opinion, that's what happened.Still, the effect is still jaw-dropping, as all the actors (especially the lead girl) had to stay in character all the time for LONG stretches of time. It's basically a there's-an-intruder-in-the-house movie with a single character trying at first to escape and then seeking out who or what is making all that noise upstairs when escape is denied her. There are some good scares (the Polaroid camera scene is heart-stopping) but on the whole the movie can become seriously tedious as the lead character endlessly goes through cupboards looking for a weapon, staring at hallways and stairs contemplating whether she should go further and just acting stupid, basically. The ending is also beyond ludicrous with a totally unswallowable twist that seems to be just tacked-on because they could, and basically invalidates the while friggin' movie.I know there's a US remake, but I haven't seen it. Hopefully, they've tightened the film up a bit and got rid of that stupid ending, but somehow I doubt it. Highly.Still worth catching if you're a big horror nut and to check out the way in which it was shot.

Very clever film
Watched it on Halloween and it certainly made us jump a few times! Being very cleverly shot in one long scene made it quite claustrophobic. Don't let the sub-titles put you off - there isn't much dialogue. It must have been good as my husband didn't fall asleep for once!

Such a bore
I think the idea of filming this all in one go is interesting and that's what got me wanting to watch it. However, the main girl is such an annoying character, not much happens....it's very frustrating. Give this a miss everyone!
