Product Description This double album was recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2001 and is an exhilarating and playful performance with romps through the history of jazz as the trio plays pieces by Fats Waller, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Gerry Mulligan and more, as well as scattering of show tunes and standards from the great American songbook. From the Artist "This is a concert recording I was holding onto until the right moment presented itself. It shows the trio at its most buoyant, swinging, melodic and dynamic" - Keith Jarrett

Arguably Keith Jarrett's best
Just have to agree with the many other reviews. This is one of Keith Jarrett's most enjoyable, and also most accessible, releases. I have been a Keith Jarrett fan since the late 70s, when I discovered him through the "My Song" release on ECM (still my favorite record of all time). I get it that a lot of jazz fans find Keith Jarrett self-indulgent or unfocused. This is the Keith Jarrett release to convince those people that he is, indisputably, the greatest jazz pianist of all time. Just a beautiful swinging record with 3 great cuts in the -- surprisingly -- stride piano style: "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Honeysuckle Rose", "You Took Advantage of Me". I will restrain myself from saying any more. If you love jazz or music at all, this is must-listen.

my favorite Jarrett recording
I love this album. I have several Keith Jarrett albums and while I have always admired his technical abilities, a lot of his solos just didn't really move me. Not so on this album. The playing and soloing are amazing, absolutely beautiful on every cut. In particular, I was amazed how he took some old stride piano songs and made them sound modern, swinging hip and new again while still playing in the stride style. But the best part of the album for me is the ballad playing. I dont believe there is a better jazz ballad player in jazz history. His playing on "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" is beautiful, tender, open, gives the music room to breathe and moving. To my ears, this is Keith at his best, certainly for his more accessible recordings. Some other albums may be more avant garde or adventurous, after all this is a record of standards and not original improvizations, but none have been as much of a pleasure to listen to for me. Very highly recommended for jazz piano fans.

Superb !
Keith Jarrett is both a technical perfectionist, and an inventive genius. I have been listening to him for 40+ years and have been on the best kind of ride, a ride of intellectual discovery and reacquaintance with the standard repertoire. There are significant elements of Tatum in Honeysuckle Rose, and lyricality in You Took Advantage of Me. Monk (Straight, No Chaser) comes out sounding already orchestrated, and it's just a trio. Gerry Mulligan's Five Brothers is a great find even if you have heard the original, and Guess I'll Have to Hang my Tears Out to Dry has been neglected for decades. The encores are On Green Dolphin Street best known from the Miles Davis recording. Only the Lonely is the first time I've heard this tune and a very pensive and pleasing rendition with Gary Peacock taking a chorus or two. I'd happily go into greater detail, but my copy arrived comprised of 2 Disc Two's, so I haven't heard Disc One yet.Rob Boyter

really good
A nice recording from the standards trio.I previously gave it 4 stars but liked it better the last listening.I was particularly struck with one solo, unfortunately I don't recall which song it was. It was one of the most impressive jazz solos I have heard in terms of the complexity of its chord changes and yet how it all fit together like a perfect puzzle. With the Olympics on right now perhaps a good analogy would be to a dive that is executed flawlessly despite being at the top of the "level of difficulty" scale. I'm sure I could find passages in various solo albums by Jarrett that I would consider on a comparable level, but this was about the most impressive solo embedded within a jazz standard type composition that I have heard.

Another Great One
I settled down to listen to this CD of which I had not read any reviews I purchased on the strength of the great selection of tunes. The first tracks where typical of this great trio then Wham out of the blue came a track of RAGTIME I nearly fell out of my chair. It would be so very easy fo three muso's of the combined talent to take a bit of "Tongue in Check" license here, but not so. This rates up high with the best of all from Keith, Gary and Jack. Thanks Guys you've done it again

Buy this album!
This is a landmark album for the trio, which is a big statement, given their output for more than 20 years. This live set shows three musicians expressing themselves as no trio has done before. It is a set where everything is so perfectly in sync: these guys are swinging, they are having fun, and if you listen carefully (and often) you'll get a history lesson on jazz. Enjoy!

Jarrett, Peacock and DeJonnette at Their Best
The trio is incredible, song selection outstanding and the quality of the recording excellent. If you're a fan of these musicians and/or styling, can't recommend this album enough.

A marvellous example of the sheer class of this trio
I bought this set a good while ago, and have only now - and by sheer chance - come upon the reviews posted here. We are all, of course, entitled to our own opinions. But I have to say that I was sorely disappointed by some of what I read. This is an absolutely marvellous set, with fine playing by all hands and an interesting variety of material and styles. Keith Jarrett's playing demonstrates - yet again - what a highly talented musician he is, with the ability to turn his hand to a wide range of material. His playing on the 3 numbers associated with "Fats" Waller is terrific. Elsewhere, he demonstrates incomparable lyricism on ballads such as his heart-stopping playing on "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry". And elsewhere again, he thrills with his work on the likes of "Green Dolphin Street", which also features some terrific work by Jack DeJohnette. That's one of the joys of Keith Jarrett - the ability to produce masterpieces whatever the starting point. I hope sometime next year to give a short introductory presentation on Keith Jarrett to fellow-members of Letchworth Jazz Appreciation Society using the 3 tracks that I have mentioned (in that order) to demonstrate for newcomers the man's versatility and sheer class.

Another top-notch concert recording.
More staggeringly good live trio music from 2001. Up there with his best without any doubt. I can understand one reviewer's frustration at the 3 'ragtime' (20s-30s swing) tracks but they are part of the whole picture. In hindsight we are lucky Jarrett recorded so prolifically. Just superb and uplifting music; we will never see or hear its like again.
