Exactly what I needed to get me up and running on Android development
I found this book after being disappointed by 2 other Android development books (Luckily I was able to return them). This book focuses on how to make GUIs, how to handle external events (like low power, screen on, etc), reading and writing to the built in DB, and basic web functionality. While the other books had "more" topics, this books choose to keep it simple and really explain fewer topics in detail. This book focuses on making sure you've mastered the basics, and (correctly) assumes you can google for more advanced topics as you need them. The book is broken into 6 "mini-books". Books 1 and 2 go over the basics of Java and Android. If you're a professional developer with java experience, you can safely skip this section. Book 3 is where the Android specific information starts. Unlike the other books I have read, the author assumes you've got enough Java skills at this point to focus exclusively on Android specifics. Books 3-6 cover android basics like GUI, storage and logging, and a quick primer on getting your app in Google Marketplace.

Good
I little dated. Things move fast....Well written. A bit more about the language (java) than I expected, but a good introduction to creating Android apps. It is a "for Dummies" book, so I guess it had to have a large intro to Java.It will be 5 starts just after an update.

Just about everything you'll ever need!
I have a copy of another Android development book, Sams Teach Yourself Android Application Development in 24 hours. The first part of that book is OK, but it gets very hard quick and near impossible to understand what you are doing, so I bought Android Application Development for Dummies with Barry Burd's Java for Dummies. The Java book, which I recommend as well, gave me a good Java foundation before tackling Android Application Development.Barry's writing is very clear and concise and he makes sure you understand what is going on completely with multiple examples. Between his thorough explanations on how things work and his great sense of humor, the book hits the points it needs to while making it an interesting read. Also, when I had questions, Barry is available a good amount of the time through his website and is more than happy to answer anything through IM.And now, I can officially call myself an Android developer.

Long time programmer, great value in book.
I have been a programmer for some time. So I wanted something that would introduce me to the Android operating system, how it functions, jargon and terminology, and that type of thing. This book is a nice one-stop-shop for those things. I had already started to program a few things in Android (just bumbling around), but after reading selected sections of this book, it immediately helped me to clean up some of the mistakes I was making. Most of these mistakes were coming from trying to apply what I know about programming to a system that is a little more unique, and wants certain activities done in ways that a traditional programmer might not be used to. This book helped to bridge that gap quickly.

Great Kindle Return Policy
I gave this book 3 stars because it might well be useful for some readers, just not for me. I was very pleased with being able to read all of the first Chapter (one of the 6 books) because it was all about how to install the software required for android development. In the past I have sometimes found such descriptions just didn't work. In this case it all worked although some of the screens/views were a bit different. It did take about 2 hours to download all the bits and pieces, that should have told me something.I went ahead and purchased full Kindle book expecting the second Chapter to tell me how to write a simple android app, perhaps a "hello world". What I got in the 2nd through 6th Chapters was enough information that seemed to be equivalent to what you would need to develop your own operating system to replace Windows. Well... maybe not that much but you get the idea. No real world examples, no "hello world". I have written several fairly complex and well documented Java Applet card games and hoped to adapt them for Android. (Yes, I know, Java Applets are so 2002.) So I don't think I'm a "Dummy", maybe that was the problem. The Kindle book return policy gave me seven days but I returned it after one day having discovered all that is described above. I love Kindle books and my wife and I really use our Prime membership for non-software items. The UPS guy stops at our door at least once a week. I guess android development just isn't for me.

Level: Intermediate
Even though the author assumes that the reader has no programming experience, be very careful when attempting to follow the examples. The reader may discover that they might have to begin from the beginning. The book may not be completely free from errors.

An excellent book for beginners
This book is extremely well written with the absolute beginner in mind. The author walks you through each stage of app development with loads of screen shots and step-by-step instructions. He also covers in great detail what to do if things go wrong. This was an invaluable resource for me when it came time to installing Eclipse. One thing to note: Eclipse is the tool of choice for Android and Java development. It is rapidly changing and no book can ever keep up. But the author provides superb after-sales service by answering any questions or problems you may have. I cannot speak highly enough of the assistance Mr Burd has provided to me above and beyond the purchase of this book.

The Book is outdated
I'm sad to say that the book is no good, since it's so outdated that the computer menus aren't nearly the same anymore. The programs you have to download all offer different options now and ask for you to fill in information the book's author didn't have to. As a result, you are left scrambling and doing a lot of things all by yourself and only sometimes being able to look at the book for guidance.

Excellent Introduction To Android App Development
This book is a great way to introduce yourself to the world of Android programming! It covers everything that one needs to know about downloading Eclipse (software used to develop your apps), writing apps with Java code and adding extra features. With this book, I have quickly learned how to create apps with graphical, textual and mathematical components.I must admit, it is difficult to follow if you are a beginner and it I would recommend it for those that have learned the basics of Java or even, any programming language at all and want to apply their knowledge to create apps. The author's instructions are clear (and humorous, at times) with detailed step by step instructions for every aspect of app development.I have had some experience with programming before and now I am creating apps which I hope to publish in the Android market very soon. This book brought me into the world of Android very well, and I am happy that I purchased it.However, I have found it a little annoying that he dedicated a full mini-book to creating apps with other methods, rather than sticking to what he wrote about for the entire book. He could have also included how to code other features, such as video or time.Overall, I am very pleased with this great slab of a book and I encourage anyone who wishes to start developing apps to read this book.

I got it too late
It was possibly a good book when it came out but it appears to be outdated, or i am not cut for android apps.
