Difficult and complicated subject handled well.
This book details the life of a middle school girl as her father, a minister to a Japanese congregation, deals with the discrimination against the innocent ethnic Japanese during World War II. This book does put you in the girls shoes, trying to understand and deal with the effects of her Brother being in Pearl Harbor during the attack, and her fathers congregation being confined in Minidoka in Idaho.I think this book would be best understood by a child of about 10 years and up. This book should be accompanied by discussions with adults about why some of Piper's classmates were so cruel to their Japanese classmates, and why some of the internees volunteered to fight for the United States. This book is much longer than many of the other Dear America books I've read and contains more pages at the end about the history surrounding the story, so if you plan to read it, give yourself extra time to finish.

Moving
Our nine year old daughter navigated this moving and exceedingly tragic account of America's internment camps for Japanese Americans during World War Two and the prevalent racism of the era. Told through the experiencs of a girl whose father endured that racism in order to minister to the Japanese Americans imprisoned by their own country.

Epilogue
I love all of the Dear America books, I've read most of them multiple times over the years! My only complaint about this particular one is they didn't talk about what became of Margie and Stan in the epilogue! That made me sad, did she ever see her husband again?

Great book!
My daughter read this book and she thoroughly enjoyed this. It is a fairly easy to read. This book describes how, after the attack of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese were treated harshly in this country, especially in the northwestern states of the U.S. She had never heard about this topic before and was quite intrigued and interested about it. Because of this book, she is planning to write a research topic about the Japanese camps in America. Great book for history lovers!

I bought this book for my daughter who is in third grade. She had checked out other Dear America books from her school library and wanted to read more of them. She loves this book. She has been reading it every night since we bought it. I look forward to buying more books in the Dear America series for her.
