Nicholas Cage delivers an outstanding performance in this thought-provoking and very disturbing film. This film illustrates the taboo world of 'snuff' films and gets up-close and personal with the people who make them. As you dive deeper into this world during the movie, your innermost beliefs about good and evil will be altered. Some for better. Mostly for the worst. The movie ends with the final encounter of the very face of evil, played by James Gandolfini, who delivers an outstanding performance in this role. The movie's final message is this: as humans, we have the capacity to commit atrocious acts against others. We also retain the capacity to show incredible love and compassion. None of us is all bad. None of us is perfectly good. We all have good and bad impulses that we must reconcile within ourselves every day. At times, people do inhumane and unspeakable things to others. Due to our fundamental flaws, you and I are just one or two bad decisions away from becoming a murderer or rapist. The 'monster' we envision doesn't look anything like a monster with claws, fangs, and weapons. Look in the mirror. The monster looks like you. And me. It's anyone and everyone. That is what makes this movie so powerful -- how much it shoves reality in your face. You'll never forget this movie.

Such a dark, twisted thriller. Nicolas Cage is great, James Gandolfini plays a believable bad guy, and Joaquin Phoenix is damn good in one of his first films.

In my opinion this is the best movie Nicholas Cage has done so far.

When I first saw this movie I hated the bad guys so much I walked out of the theatre angry. This is a good thing by-the-way. Not only are the bad guys repellent creeps they are also, in a way, pretty ordinary. You'll never look at a complete stranger the same way again.I thought Nic Cage did a very good job of portraying a squeaky-clean private eye Tom Welles (he's just so innocent looking) descending into the world of hardcore pornography and unknowingly letting it change him.Joaquin Phoenix plays wanna-be musician Max California who is also Welles' sidekick. I'd never really seen him in any movies before this but now that I've seen him in a likeable role, in a movie where there are very few likeable characters, I look forward to his next movies.Some parts of this film to me are very disturbing, for example the first viewing of the snuff film where we see the girl cry or finale with the jumping record. Joel Schumacher certainly has redeemed himself over Batman and Robin (shudder) and should stop being the victim of nasty critisism by critics who are rubbishing this brilliant film only because Batman and Robin was terrible.If you like your thriller movies to be deep, intense and nerve-racking then watch this movie. Schumacher ever explains in his commentart that the movie was originally about 3 hours long and an alternate ending had Welles kill himself by driving into a wall and a whole subplot of Welles trying to save a girl who was quickly headed in the same route as the original victim.The DVD is in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby 5.1 sound. Aside from Schumacher's commentary the only extras are a rather stupid featurette and a trailer.

Some things don't age well like bread this movie is like bread in a sense that it definitely didn't age well. It kinda falls into victim blaming territory.Sex work is real work.Also side note the final fight at the end kinda reminds me of 60s Batman fights without the colorful pow boom bang etc

If you like creepy murder mysteries I recommend it

Un des meilleurs films avec Nicolas Cage. Très bon scénario avec un Joachin Phoenix extra bien avant Napoléon de Ridley Scott. Film un peu glauque par moments, mais qui se suit avec intérêt. A voir absolument.

saw it when it was originally released, I'm a big Nicholas Cage fan....was reminded of it again recently so bought it on Amazon...interesting,if weird subject...taboo subject,however very well acted by the whole cast,great direction,not gaudy or deliberately 'tacky' and a great performance from Nicholas Cage

Ho sempre amato quest' attore e ricordo con piacere face-off o segnali dal futuro. Ma devo dire che questo film e' d' avvero una chicca. Molto duro l' argomento e i contenuti ma vale la pena vederlo e nel mio caso da collezionista di averlo come dvd (pultroppo non ho trovato la versione blu-ray). Arrivato in tempi come al solito perfetti e in condizioni perfette.
