The New German Cookbook: More Than 230 Contemporary and Traditional Recipes

A pleasure to read and work with cook book.
This book has a fabulous glossary of forty or so pages with clear and anecdotal descriptions of German culinary words and phrases, almost worth the price of the book by itself. Many recipes are old familiar things my grandmother and mother used to prepare, adapted to American kitchens and ingredients with out dumbing down or sacrificing quality.. The recipes are formatted in logical progressive instructions. Most of all, the book can virtually be read as prose, since there is so much information; historical, cultural, as well as technical lore.

One of the best cookbooks I have ever used
This cookbook is well-organized, well-researched, and well-written. The recipes are precise and accurate. Each recipe has a backstory, but not too much of a backstory, just enough to entice one with its history. I found most interesting the vegetable recipes which included Rosa Wurtz Green Beans, several kohlrabi dishes, and a Brussels Sprouts-Quark tart that's out of this world. I have made at least five fish recipes, too, as well as a dozen or so desserts. I highly recommend this to cooks and chefs of any level.

Great overall cookbook
Great overall cookbook. There is always room for improvement, but in my opinion this is one of the best on the market. Tons of recipes, and little anecdotes on the side of each page, and it explains not only the ingredients, but also the method for getting the right result. Again, not 100%, but pretty darn good, and has lots of sweet breads and desserts that other books lack.

Great book but no pictures
The only draw back to this book is there are no pictures. I did love the fact I managed to get it earlier then expected and even found a nice note from the seller included.

Not an easy read.
Good recipes...unfortunately the print in the book was VERY small. Had a hard time reading it.

Good German food
I liked how easy the recipes were! I wish there where pictures to see how the recipe should look but less stress if they don’t match

Disappointing
Far too many contemporary off-beat german recipes & far too little traditional german recipiesIf you want good basic german recipies this cookbook is not for you.If you are tired of true traditional german cooking and want to try some off-beat ' not what you would expect from german cooking ' recipies you might like this cookbook a little

Recipes are OK but I was disappointed that there were so few illustrations.
I bought this book as a present, and although the recipes look OK, the book has very few illustrations. Cookery books need good illustrations to help make the dishes look tempting, and to indicate what they will (hopefully) look like when they're finished.
