Already calibrated right out of the box - dont need to re-calibrate prior to first use
I bought this thermometer to replace my previous thermometer that broke when it fell into water for less than a minute. I read other reviews that mentioned this thermometer had to be re-calibrated prior to first use but I tested it and it was calibrated correctly right out of the box. I think there is some confusion regarding calibrating based on the User Manual which is written in less than perfect English. This product is made in China so I'm guessing the author of the User Manual was not completely fluent and totally proficient in English. It does say ....You can use it directly and has been calibrated well. It further says.. How to re-calibrate it when you need it. I dont know why or when you would need to re-calibrate it but my thermometer worked fine, as is, right out of the box. I dont know if you have to re-calibrate after you change the batteries but mine was fine right out of the box. I even tested it to be certain and it was accurate because I use this to maintain proper water temperature for Hot Stone Massage and I need to have an accurate read for safety. I like the large easy to read numbers and I like how it folds. I havent used it much, but for now, I am satisfied with this purchase.

Now displays incorrect temperatures.
I purchased this digital meat thermometer a month and a half ago. It worked very well initially but now displays incorrect temperature values that fluctuate from one random # to another. Often the values shown are unrealistically high, such as 584 degrees F. The random and unrealistically high values occur regardless of whether the probe is at normal room temperature or in grilled meat when the temperature should be about 144 degrees F. Sometimes the display shows nonsensical "HH.H". I've changed out the original battery to the spare that came in the package but that didn't resolve the problem. I've also tried calibrating the thermometer and that too didn't resolve the problem. I've sent GDEALER an email asking for instructions on how to resolve the problem or for a replacement thermometer. I'll update this review based upon their response.Update as of mid-Sept 2018: GDEALER responded perfectly. They apologized and quickly sent me a replacement thermometer. The replacement works very well. It measures within a few seconds, displays the value on a screen that's easy to read, is easy to understand & use and is easy to clean. I've compared the reading to a laboratory-grade thermometer I own and the readings are nearly equal. I'm very satisfied with the thermometer and with GDEALER's responsiveness.

Had a post-purchase problem, but great customer service took care of it.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Not impressed. I forage for mushrooms, and need to check the ground temperature; the third time I used it, the tip came right off, leaving torn wires behind. Yeah, clay soil is sticky... but not any more so than meat would be. When it was working, it took most of a minute for the temperature to stabilize - a bit odd, given my previous experience with using thermometers this way (it usually only takes a couple of seconds.)Poorly constructed, marginal functionality. Since mine is past the return date, I'll be looking for some different brand.EDIT: Whatever my original qualms about this gadget, I've got to give props to their customer service: after I posted the review, they contacted me and offered to send me a replacement - even though my purchase was well past the return period. They sent it out promptly, and this one seems to be working normally (temperature stabilizes in a few seconds.)Given my previous experience with the probe tip, I've prevented any possibility of that problem recurring by putting a drop of epoxy on the spot where it attaches - there's a nice little plastic collar right there which gave me a nice little fillet, so that's a done deal. Other than that - well, I'll wait and see, but meanwhile, these folks deserve a good rating for their excellent response.

Excellent food thermometer
I bought this thing probably 4 years ago and still use it today. I don't think I've had to change the batteries in it yet either. This thing is great, reads temperatures accurately, has a lite-up display, displays in both Fahrenheit and Centigrade.Only con is that occasionally (maybe 3 times since I've owned it), it will appear to read incorrectly. I usually try and measure something known by placing the probe in my hand and trying to read my external body temperature. If it's not near what you would expect, simply close it and reopen it, seems to recalibrate itself.Would absolutely buy again, or if this one eventually dies given it's service length so far.

I compared this to the hundred dollar Thermapen I've had a few years. Here's the result.....
Years ago, I purchased a Thermapen after a respected food journal listed it as the best you can buy. It had better be at around a hundred dollars! I bit the bullet and have been happy with it's performance in consistently making the perfect steaks without overcooking. I saw this offering on amazon for a fraction of the price and assumed it had to be inferior. Maybe it took more time for the temp to be displayed from an inferior thermocouple. Maybe it was less accurate and not as durable. This arrived and I immediately compared it next to the Thermapen during food prep. The result amazed me. Construction, similarly durable. Readout time, almost identical. Readout accuracy; one was slightly superior since it broke the temp down to tenths of a degree, which of course is not necessary. And that one was this GDealer! This one also has several buttons to hold the temp or something, but I haven't even looked at them since so far I don't have a need. Conclusion: Maybe I'm missing something here and now I do have both thermometers. But why should anyone pay 5 or 6 times as much for a thermometer that seems to perform identically? Ten stars!

Highly recommended
Awesome. Auto shut off, quick and accurate sensing. Used all the time. Folds up to protect sensor and fit very compactly in drawer.
