Mary, Mother of Jesus

Great Book! Hard to find content about Mary the mother of Jesus. A little too advanced for little ones.

My son picked this out and he loves it. Mary tells the story of her life and it highlights the Biblical events she witnessed, and it is suitable for either Catholics or Protestants. The illustrations are very appropriate and not cartoonish. Highly recommended.

This is a neat idea for a book about Mary (first person, looking back on her life), but the execution was disappointing. Mary is an "everyday person" here - I don't get the impression of her dignity as the pure and sinless Mother of God, the Virgin of Virgins and Queen of Heaven and Earth. By bringing Mary "down to earth", what's left behind is her heavenly virtues. Here is Mary's report of her thoughts when the Angel Gabriel came to her from heaven to deliver the glorious news that she had been chosen to be the Mother of God: "When I first heard this message, I was utterly dismayed..." Utterly dismayed? That's very strong language, and it doesn't paint Mary in a flattering light. I do understand that she is the Mother of Sorrows and that there was a profound suffering in her life, but this suffering was always lived in the profound love for the will of God. The way Mary is portrayed in this book was distasteful to me. This book gets two stars for the attempt and the beautiful art, but it's not inspiring at all.

I just didn't like the way this book portrayed Mary. Too simple and not enough depth for the sinless Mother of God and her role in Jesus' life, and no mention of her role in our lives now. The words of scripture (magnificat) were dumbed down. I was also not a fan of the art work although I'm sure some would like it.

I am Catholic and sometimes find Christian books underplay Mary's importance. Not this one. Beautiful
