Thyroid health is only one book away.
This is the book for anyone with questions about thyroid issues. I have been dealing with different physicians for this disorder for more than 34 years. This is the only information source that has really answered my questions. Most physicians are very poorly educated and often can only offer the standard--often incorrect--advise on medications and other related hormonal interactions with the thyroid. The other source is Mary Shorman on the net. (Name is probably spelled wrong.) She has a very informative and honest, up-to-date and non-pharmaceutical approach to make a real difference in how you understand what to do about your thyroid disorder. Your GP is worthless when it comes to this subject. And most endocrinologist are simply not willing to look at anything outside of the drug companies sales materials. If you think this is not true or that these comments are to "radical" for you to believe, then live your life as a constant stage of discomfort and depression by taking Synthroid.Or, start with Shames book and become educated and then your life will change.

Awesome read for anyone that has Hashimotos
What I love about Dr. Shames writing is that he write's with in depth experience and wholeheartedness about the disease that afflicts his own family. I have an integrative approach to health and I appreciate that the author, an ivy league M.D., offers alternative treatments and quality supplements to calm the inflammation, instead of treating the disease with pharmaceuticals alone. His recommendations offered can be understood by the average layperson. If you are not on treatment and if you think you may have a thyroid problem - this could be a valuable book for you. He also lists beneficial supplements for different symptoms that he has treated his patients with. While expensive, I have used his recommended brands under the care of other doctors based on their efficacy. I do not believe he recommends the supplements because he is getting some sort of kick back. I believe he is sincerely trying todo is best and outreach to the masses to address this terrible disease.I've suffered my entire life because I was living with this disease and was not diagnosed. I do not do well on NDT or synthetic replacement, and for me I have no choice but to explore alternative treatments as described by Dr. Shames.

The Shames' have helped make my life better as a male thyroid suffer.
Haven't finished reading it but at the moment I'm skimming through it as a lot of the book is more female related. I take what I need from the book (as a male hypothyroid suffer) and find the information very informative when it comes to my quest of attaining a balanced thyroid. As always, I'm never disappointed with the material the Shames' put out on thyroid disease (nice to see the daughter also contributing with her mom and dad!).I was turned on to this book because of their first "Thyroid Power" book that gave me the knowledge and confidence to challenge the conventional "wisdom" of most Synthroid pill-pushing endocrinologist and thyroid doctors out there. Their strategies on finding objective doctors to fine tune your thyroid medication (especially the T3 and T4 combination) has served me well (both younger and older men suffering from erectile dysfunction and/or mental fog could surely benefit with the addition of T3 (i.e., Cytomel) if they find T4 (i.e., Synthroid) isn't working out for them. I'm living proof! Thanks to folks like the Shames' and Mary Shomon, we are now armed with the right tools to take action towards the betterment of our own mental, physical, and even spiritual longevity and well-being!

For the first time I have hope that someone can help me feel like me for the first time in over 20 years
I ordered this book, downloaded it and read it from cover to cover right away. How I wish I could have read this book over twenty years ago upon being diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I went to doctor after doctor in as many years having only my TSH checked after being on Synthroid and liothyronine, and NEVER having "normal" labs or a normal energy level. I thought maybe I had been misdiagnosed all those years ago so I stopped taking my medicine to see what would happen. It was at this time that I happened across something on Pinterest that led me to this book.I have sent a collection of my blood and saliva to the Lab mentioned in the book and I have also scheduled an appointment to see Dr. Shames very soon. For the first time I have hope that someone can help me feel like me for the first time in over 20 years. Wish me luck.

Eye Opening Book!!
I have hypothyroidism and this was an eye opening book. Some of the symptoms I had for years, I did not realize were due to this illness. Some of my tests didn't show I had low thyroid. I also did not realize there were other supplements you could take that would help. I had a practioner give me a considerable amount of supplements of iodine and found out thru this book that is not the answer and in fact can be dangerous. I have had accupuncture in the past and felt great when I was getting it, not realizing what good it was actually doing. I am now looking for an accupuncturist in my area. I have not checked out all of the websites mentioned in the appendix, but will do so. This is such an imformative book. I will keep at hand for future reference. I would definately recommed this book.

Within days of taking 200mg at 9pm he felt a great improvement, not only post exercise but happier too ...
My husband and myself both have hypothyroidism but different versions. I identified both of our types (from the Moody, Edgy, Foggy, Sleep or Needy Mind Types and both of us have benefited tremendously. My husband's thyroid tests showed he was at optimum dose of levothyroxine (O.5 Blood Test) so because he was getting post exercise fatigue we tried him on 5 HTP as it seemed highly likely he needed it from reading about his Type. Within days of taking 200mg at 9pm he felt a great improvement, not only post exercise but happier too (5 HTP helps with depression and he realised he had also been feeling quite low in mood). He started to take 100mg by mistake and within weeks the same problem returned. We upped back to 200mg and he immediately felt the benefit. Similar story for me but different Mind Type and different supplements, acupressure points, lifestyle recommendations. Very good book!

Thyroid Power or the Power of Marketing?
I thought that this book would have been good as I was impressed by an earlier book written by the Shames family. However, this one grated with me. It was a strange book which took every opportunity to promote the Shames' commercial links peppered by the Shames' daughter's eastern medicine perspective - a bit like the old Kung Fu series where eastern wisdom is shared at the end of each chapter except that Grasshopper had obviously flown the nest thinking he had had a lucky escape. It just didn't gel together and felt like it was a patchwork of hastily written and collated articles. All in all, I thought it was a waste of money and by the time I got to the end of the book, I felt like I was just a target for their marketing and product promotions.
