Mountaineer welded aluminum camp stove vs. Partner welded camp stove
The Mountaineer welded aluminum stove is often compared to the Partner Stoves. I have both, so its a fair comparison. This is a large stove, wide and thick. It is lighter than the Partner welded aluminum stove because the metal isn't as thick, though heavier gauge than some more colorful, recent stoves. Both of them seem indestructible. But, the Partner feels like you could throw it around and not worry, while the Mountaineer feels like you'd have to take care of it a little more. The Mountaineer has a few edges to be careful of in the punch-outs and corners. Easy to ignore, or fix with a cheap deburring tool or steel wool. The Mountaineer has awesome burners. It delivers all the heat they claim, just like Partner does. The Mountaineer has electric start, while a Partner takes a lighter. I like the wings on the windscreen, which latch in one position only. Partner uses an adjustable width wind screen, which I like better. But with Partner, they are an option for additional cost. The fold-up hinges and latches are good quality. The knobs on both are tucked inside the case so they won't get hit. Both are easy to clean. Watch out when heating a small cup or pot on the Mountaineer, the grill is s bit widely spaced, but the grills are very heavy duty. I dislike the Mountaineer propane bottle connector on the front, it's potentially in the way. The Partner can be ordered with your choice of connector position. I dinked a star on the Mountaineer for travel, because it's large, but then, you can order accessory legs to make it a free-standing stove. This is very cool. Maybe being large is a plus for a lot of cooking. No such attachments for Partner. This is a stove I'd buy again. You probably can't break it, but I love the hand-crafted USA workmanship of the Partner a little better.

If you want more, spend more
Stove operates well, does what it is supposed to do which is heat things up so hard to fault it there. Great flame control. Had no problem cooking a decent variety of things that have been a real problem on many (most) other stoves of different styles i have tried in the past.It really is hard to give it more than 3 stars at this point to be totally honest. The construction quality of the architecture itself is average to below average in many places. The welds are extremely sloppy in most places, none of the edges seem to have any kind of finish work done to them, and the aluminum is weak enough that it came heavily dented in multiple places. Even the burners were completely misaligned due to the panel deforming, seemingly just from torquing down the assembly screws when it was built. One of the latches really does nothing due to poor installation alignmentAll of that being said, i really dont think that i can accuse the value of the price paid on sale vs the quality to be inappropriate. You are getting two seemingly great burners, with a fantastic cooking area, wind screens, a nice solid base to work from, and I have found i can store a great bit of stuff in the stove itself so not that much space is really being lost. The flimsy aluminum will get beat up, but will it ever affect performance or compromise the stoves integrity? Not likely. Dents can be easily pounded / pushed back into place, and scratches are about as irrelevant as something can get for an item like this in my opinion. The last factor is going to be long term durability and serviceability. Will be taking mine on a 25k mile tour and it will be put through the wringer for sure. Hopefully wont have to come back and change the review in a negative way. Maybe 3 stars is low, but i think to get more than that it should be exceptional, which i dont necessarily think it is. However i do think it does exactly what it purports to do, and i dont feel that i paid too much in the slightest, and thats about all you can ask of something. If it shrugs off all the abuse it is about to endure, its definitely gaining some stars.

Ordered three stoves. One arrived already dented they are supposed to be self-lighting, but by day 2 we were back to using independent butane lighters. If it weren’t for the necessity of the high BTU to boil dishwater on a Grand Canyon trip, I’d say save your money and buy a Coleman.

Sharp Edges are a Deal Breaker
I got this as a gift. It would be great, but it has a horrific manufacturing defect that is utterly absurd. The whole thing is covered in razor sharp edges. It's ridiculous. I cut myself during the first use. I'm going to have to spend an hour deburring the thing. For a $200 stove, this is just unacceptable. Don't buy this unless you're OK sinking some labor into correcting the problem.
