Summer of 84

Five 🌟
It's a superb movies of this era which is rare these days. The title is misleading however. One might think it's a movie that was produced and filmed in the 1980s, but that is not so. It was made and featured in the year 2018 or around that time and only the timeline in the plot was 1984. They didn't do too good a job portraying that. They threw in some 80s styles and hair dos and a vote Reagan yard sign and 80s police style car and landlines, but other than that it looked like this era of style. Ok, maybe they did try to convey it more than I thought, but basically a viewer could tell within five minutes of watching when the movie was actually made. But, it was good. The chemistry between the boys seemed genuine and that too is rare these days. No fat shaming at all or teasing for the heavy set boy from his friends because friends don't do that. Not in this movie and thumbs up to that! Lots of sex talk but most teenage boys do have that on their minds, so that's not really acceptable, but understandable. It's a suspenseful movie about four tight friends who try to prove that their next door cop neighbor is behind mass killings during the summer of 1984. The man who played the cop fit the bill to a tee and thumbs up to his good acting! I wasn't too thrilled with the ending. It was a little disappointing, but again what a person expects to happen doesn't happen, so maybe this movie really is a five 🌟

Loved this movie
Great movie. Grandson was first rolling his eyes at the beginning of the movie saying boring. Ten minutes later he’s shushing me. By the end of the movie I hear AYE, AYE …..lolThe movie was great but the picture itself was off.

Effective and unforgettable with a few minor issues.
The story: In this seemingly idyllic suburban community, someone is and has been abducting teenage boys, whom are never seen again. A group of scruffy best-friends decide one of their neighbors 'is the guy' and set out to investigate, with results that range from silly to inconclusive to terrifyingly too close to home for comfort. Enough said. SUMMER OF 84 is close to being a masterpiece, but not quite and the reason is simple: the writing does not match the quality of the performances and production values. The first two-thirds of the film is all too familiar, with far too many nods to films like "It" and television programs such as "Stranger Things", both of which are overrated in my opinion. A big problem with SUMMER OF 84 for me was the premise that someone in this community is kidnapping and more than likely murdering teenage boys, and yet this place seems to go on with life as normal. Am i wrong or shouldn't there be a curfew to keep kids off the streets? As the story develops, I didn't feel any real sense of dread or suspense, because there's too much time focusing on these kids cursing, insulting one another and clumsily investigating whom they believe might be a killer. But then, just when I'm getting somewhat tired of these kids and their little 'game', the film suddenly gets very serious and very dark; quickly redeeming itself. During the final segments, there is one nightmarish and ferociously disturbing image that I am still having a hard time getting out of my head; one single shot that I am pretty sure will have more sensitive viewers wishing they had never watched the film in the first place. The film at this point is not playing games with us. It's going for the jugular, and things aren't quite done yet. Trust me. Overall I liked the film very much, but there was an even better film here if more care had been taken in story development and pacing. No matter what I think it's flaws are, SUMMER OF 84 is still an unforgettable and effective horror movie . On a technical note, do not hesitate to buy the Blu-Ray and ignore the fact that it is a burnt disc, manufactured on-demand. Burnt discs get a bad rap. They are just as durable and have the same longevity as any mass-produced retail Blu-ray.

BEING NEIGHBORLY IS NOT ALWAYS A GOOD THING
If the kids from Our Gang, The Bowery Boys, and The Goonies were compressed into a group of four and then placed in a domestic setting comparable to Rear Window we would find ourselves in Summer of 84. Make the civic locale Disturbia, add a serial killer who has been responsible for at least a dozen missing boys around the ages of 14-15, one newspaper delivery boy with an inquisitive mind, and you have all the ingredients for a murder mystery thriller. There are also interesting nods to RW: binoculars used for spying replace a telescope; very attractive female resident next door who can almost be seen in the all together; a male neighbor - a policeman - who is always busy digging and planting; blinding flashbulbs go off accidentally near the end reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart and his flashbulb camera; eye contact is suddenly made during the act of mutual spying; the gang's leader has a hobbled leg near the end...That's all I'll say lest I give away a "spoiler" except that there is a significant difference between a "twist" and "twisted". One other reviewer said that the ending reminded him of Seven while all along it was like seeing The Goonies, and I agree. Because the ending of this film "pushed the envelope too far" that is why I gave it only four stars. Otherwise, the acting was excellent, the movie made me jump a couple of times, kept me on edge, and if you overlook some obvious loopholes this was a well crafted thriller.

Great little film. Very poor quality product.
Summer of ‘84 is one of the most underseen and underrated horror films in recent memory. Rather than simply regurgitating bland 80s nostalgia, it uses it to lull the viewer into a false sense of security, before swiftly and brutally subverting expectations. I won’t go in to detail here, but the film’s way of challenging a particular brand of cinematic comfort food is refreshing. It’s not perfect: some of the twists it takes require a significant suspension of disbelief, as does the central romance. However, these are minor quibbles, more than made up for by strong performances, skilled direction and bold, unsettling finale.Quick note on the product itself. As others have mentioned, this appears to be a pirate copy and looks incredibly cheap. This would possibly be acceptable if it was a third of the price, but at the current price it’s a rip-off.

1 star "fake copy" review is false.
Leaving a review simply to tell you to ignore the review by the user who rated it one star thinking it's fake. This is a manufactured on demand disc on a BD-R. Most people seemed to know that. There is also nothing in the image that shows a slipcover. I'm guessing they think a stock image means slipcover. The only reason I am rating this one less star is because the disc does not seem to have the best mastering. It can be a finicky depending on your player. I'm basing this off my PS3 in my bedroom not being able to play the disc (it struggles and freezes up) where as my PS4 in my living room and a friends LG bluray player have played it flawlessly. So just a warning it you have an older or lower end player.

Teeangers on a mission to protect neighbourhood!
Interesting movie, with 4 kids doing a great job as the teenagers' group of high-school friends on a "mission", investigating a weird and frightening neighbor (who happens to be a solitary police officer). The plot however could have been worked out in a more thrilling way, the last final part cuts short a bit. But overall, well done!

Looks Like a FAKE Copy
Rating this a 1 star. Not because of the movie itself, but the item. First off, shows a slip cover and I never got one. Secondly, looking at the back, you can tell it's a poor print job. Then the actual CD itself looks horrendous. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be like this, but from a collecting point of view, i'm highly disappointed.
