Understanding Jamaican Patois: An Introduction to Afro-Jamaican Grammar

As a Jamaican, this is an authentic book. It is thorough in explaining the root and prong of patois.

I'll soon be leaving for the Peace Corps in Jamaica and I bought this book to get a little introduction to Jamaican patois. I liked that there was a little background and origin info. Also, I feel that the author did a good job in trying to explain the complex grammar and sentence structure. It definitely gave a brief overview, but I feel it would be more useful once I actually get to Jamaica and am able to hear the words pronounced.

Does a great job of explaining the structure of this complex "everyday language". I know what to listen for better, but it does not help with new common words that are added over time.

This is a really good book. It is worth taking the time to read and understand. It's an affordable book that really helps understand the Jamaican language of Patois. It was delivered right away. The service of delivery and packaging was great. Am completely satisfied with this order. It is worth sharing too. Learning a new language can be fun.

Auf der Suche nach einem nicht zu umfangreichen Patois-Sprachkurs bin ich auf Understanding Jamaican Patois gestossen. Hier wird auf unterhaltsame (aber durchaus linguistische) Art die Entwicklung von Patois erklärt und schon nach wenigen Seiten hat man ein gewisses Grundwissen, um zumindest auf Patois geschriebene Texte halbwegs dechiffrieren zu können. Was danach folgt ist (wie bei jeder Sprache) das Lernen der Vokabeln und der grundsätzlichen Grammatik. Der Umfang ist gut und das Vokabular ist sehr alltagstauglich (allerdings nicht unbedingt touristisch!).Mein Anspruch an das Buch ist auch genau das, was der Titel verspricht: UNDERSTANDING. D.h. ich möchte gar nicht in die Lage versetzt werden zu versuchen es selbst zu sprechen (da macht man sich als deutscher Tourist dann eher lächerlich), aber zu verstehen, was gesagt wird und lesen zu können, was so geschrieben wird, das ist schon nicht schlecht! (So versteht man dann auch die Facebook Status-Meldungen seiner jamaikanischen Freunde :-D)

I don't even have this book yet, but I am surprised that Michelle has such a negative review of this book without even reading it either. Could Michelle recommend a better reference (or write one). They phrase books and dictionaries are of limited help when you are trying to actually learn the language and there is no Rosestta Stone course available. It is all great to have a pedantic monologue about the proper label for this language, but I doubt that is the focus of anyone who wants to buy the book.
