The AutoCoop LayLight uses 110v power from an outlet to run. You can run it off of a 12v battery but that requires a solar charging set up to do.

Q: do I need to purchase a separate cable to hook this up to solar?

Yes, unless your solar powered battery has a standard electrical outlet, you will need special adapters.
