Changing the world with wisdom of home values
A young woman begins working for a politically active family, As their housekeeper, she sees that they are good people, but some in their association are not. Like a good historian, she takes notes and attends events where she finds bad undercurrents from political dealings elsewhere. She questions people and candidates and asks person on the street kinds of question to candidates. While in the favor of her host family, she has feelings for the son, but also concerns contradictory campaign working in THEIR own interests that would harm the constituents in the area. This entertaining movie has some huigher profile actors and is in sharp contrast to many in our current two party system and the two-face media that praises those they favor and kick the others down. The Farmer's Daughter should mak e think about how far we have backed ourselves into OUR corner to see the common ground in front of us all!

LIKE A YUMMY CUP OF HOT CHOCOLATE, WITH CHARACTERS AHEAD OF THEIR TIME
Outstanding picture and sound quality make this DVD a top buy, along with a whole lot more… Take a charming, fast-paced tale about a resourceful Minnesota farm girl who heads to the Big City to study nursing but ends up working as a maid in the home of a congressman and eventually runs for congress herself, add in a pair of talented stars that play off of one another perfectly, and you have a movie that will warm you like a yummy cup of hot chocolate… Loretta Young’s sparkling portrayal of Katie Holstrom, complete with a convincing Swedish accent that obviously won her a well-deserved Oscar, is the first of many reasons to watch this heart warmer. Matching Young is the always-superb Joseph Cotton, who gives another of his seamless performances, this time as congressman Glenn Morley, the wealthy bachelor whose heart is melted by Katie’s charm… The Farmer’s Daughter’s wavers between comedic romance and the sleazy side of politics, while boasting three female characters ahead of their time. After all, this is 1947, so it’s refreshing to see that Katie’s run for congress isn’t questioned by the men in her life. Then there’s Mrs. Morley, Glenn’s mother, played expertly by Ethel Barrymore, a wealthy political operative who’s seen holding her own in a room full of men. And finally, there’s Virginia, a newspaperwoman played by Rose Hobart, who reports on politics – traditionally a male reporter’s territory at the time – and not, say, society news. Seeing these women break the proverbial glass ceiling in a late 1940s film is yet another reason The Farmer’s Daughter is so appealing.

I'vebeen waiting a long time for this!
I saw this movie when It first came out, and a few times after that, Lately, with all the troubles in Congress and the Presidency, I began to think about some of the really good movies that had a message about citizenship, truth, responsibility for/to my country. I'm a 25 year military retiree, and I was beginning to question how we got to this place in our history, and was my memory of a united country, dedication to helping each other, and caring about the good of all, was as important as I recall. I needed something that spoke to these questions that was a reflection of my real, lived past. This movie came to mind. I've been in pursuit ever since....and it's well worth it. All those values come alive again as we lived them....and will again. My hope is restored.

Would have given 5 stars if it played clearer but ADORE THIS FILM!
This movie was made in 1947. I started watching it in the late 50's on TV. I fell in love of it and watched it constantly on reruns then it disappeared in the 70's. But, I found it finally on DVD. Loretta Young, Joseph Cotton & the GREAT Ehel Barrymore (she & her family were the royalty of motion pictures). It's a priceless look at politics at that time and you'll find it matches our current politics. It's funny, sweet with a little drama and a great way to feel about voting in our country. It's a good old fashion comedy/drama! It was delivered just a little late BUT was so worth it. Not a great print but I love it any way!

Movies don't get better than this!
Few movies have delighted, amazed and astonished me all at the same time, but this one does it all. A subtle, brilliant script, elegant and expert acting and directing all rolled up in a charming romantic comedy... only it isn't.This is a movie with a powerful message that was timely in 1947 and just as timely today. (I'll be pondering that fact for a long time.)Loretta Young won an Oscar for a role that would have been fluff in any other film, but she demonstrates a masterful, light touch on every scene. It's like watching a virtuoso musician hit every note just right.Just do yourself a favor and get a copy and watch it.I have loved this movie for years and I'm thrilled to see it released on DVD.

Enchanting!
I absolutely LOVE this movie! Great performances by Loretta Young, Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore, and Charles Bickford. I love the message brought about by the story that elected officials have the responsibility to serve EVERYONE they represent and that EVERY citizen should have equal rights under the law. These underlying themes ring true today, especially with the divisiveness engendered by certain elected officials! These concepts are woven into an enchanting and uplifting love story. Well written and well played!

The Farmer's Daughter
A lovely film done the old-fashioned way with great actors, exposing political shenanigans but reassuring enough there'll be a happy outcome. Has the humour, plot and acting most modern films lack. Saw it only once on Freesat and knew I had to have it.

This 1947 film totally holds up & is chock-full of wonderful performances.
I was delighted to stumble upon this 1947 film, finally upgraded to DVD & Blu-ray. In my opinion, this movie hasn't aged & still holds up well. Loretta Young & Joseph Cotton play off each other beautifully & with great pinache. In fact the film got several Oscar noms, including a Best Supporting Actor nom for Charles Bickford; while Loretta Young won the Oscar for Best (leading) Actress. In this era we'd call this picture a "RomCom", & it's a good one. Calling all old-movie-buffs : you owe it to yourself to check it out. Hell -- even if you're not an old movie buff this film is worth checking out. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Comedy, drama, a love story, politics -- what more can you ask?!
