1968, and Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll was in danger of losing his crown as the King, he had not performed as a rock and roll singer for years, instead his work had been in mediocre movies - many of which used back catalogue material for the soundtracks.Elvis needed to pull off something special to reclaim his throne, and that something special was broadcast on NBC on December 3, 1968.Through two sit-down sessions, two stand up sessions and some big choreographed sessions, Elvis Presley didn't just re-establish himself as a contemporary performer, he laid down a marker to his rivals, saying that the King was back, live and here to stay.35 years later, this deluxe edition DVD brings together nearly all of the raw footage still available from the sessions that were used to form the television performance. The masters have clearly been given the once-over by engineers as the picture quality is good, and the audio can be enjoyed in 5.1 Dolby Digital.Having said that, there appear to be points where the original soundtrack survives before the sound "warms up" and surround sound kicks in. This is quite noticeable in several points, and I'm sure that this was unavoidable as it does distract.Secondly, on my surround system, there is a clear lip-synch problem during the opening segment of the special, but this clears up during the first sit-down part of the show.Those are minor points.There are two discs packed full of the additional footage not used during the special, including the out-takes, and this additional material is well presented and explained in a 24-page full colour booklet that accompanies the three DVDs.It is this additional material that prompted me to buy this product, and it is fair to say that I am not at all dissapointed.Even if you have this on VHS, seriously consider buying this DVD. You won't regret it at all.

what to say about this stunning set of DVDs that hasnt already been said?This is a must have, not only for Elvis fans, but for any serious fan of music.over 7 hours of the king - picture quality is superb, as is the sound and sitting through many takes of parts of the show you honestly begin to feel is if you're actually there yourself.lots of goofing around but also a glimpse into just how hard Elvis worked when he had to, no real tantrums, no primadonna behaviour just a guy determined to get everything just right.No need to spend youre time and money surfing the net looking for duff copies of this show on bootlegs, this time you get everything, the two sit down shows and the two stand up shows which ive never seen before in their entirety and are my personal favourites.to cap it all you get 4 versions of 'if I can dream' one of which i think is actually better than the one that was used for the show (Elvis forgets to say 'thank you and goodnight' into the mike rendering the take unusable)miss this DVD and you ARE missing out

Elvis has never looked or performed better in my opinion than in the 68' Comeback Special. If you loved the sit down performances (my fave parts), then you're in for a treat, the first disc both on show, and they are great!!You are not going to see the King in a better mood than this. He laughs, jokes through the songs, plays about with the lyrics.There is just so much on here, and when you get to DISC 3, believe me when they say it's all on there, they mean it. All the incompleted takes, stops and starts. Just a fantastic package.5 stars easy.

Really happy to have this great box set. A must for any Elvis fan. Would recommend this seller for prompt delivery & a well packaged item.

I ordered this item because I thought it was about time I updated my old VHS video copy of the 68 Special. I couldn't believe the result when I put the first DVD in. The sound and picture quality is first class. It's also refreshing to see that for once we have all the material, both sit down shows and stand up shows plus all the material used in the production numbers. The booklet is exciting and informative.This is Elvis at his raw, rock n' roll best delivered with all the advantages of DVD. If you think you've seen the '68 Special, think again. A must for all Elvis fans!

disc one and two great,disc three should have left on cutting room floor,that said first two discs a must have,great value 2nd hand.

This is Elvis at his post army best. He's tanned, lithe and sexy. He offers us his amazing voice in all it's range and his sweet,innocent side and his easy humour. We all know he wasn't always like this and so what we see is only part of him but never-the-less, it's an important part to recapture and enjoy. He's the consumate entertainer.

I bought this as I wanted to see all the extras not included in the original release..Supposed to be 3 discs but there was only 2!! Very disappointed..

Le coffret est tout simplement fabuleux. C'est un joyau, un bijou que tout fan d'Elvis devrait posséder. J'ai attendu longtemps, avant de commander, mais ça en valait la peine. J'adore...tout simplement

Ich bin mit Elvis Presley Filmen aufgewachsen, obwohl ich erst 22 bin waren diese Filme zuhause immer Pflichtprogramm meiner Mutter und dann mußte man es sich halt anschauen --> sonderliches Interresse an den Filmen hatte ich lange lange Zeit überhaupt nicht, weil ich sie über eine dauer von 15 Jahren einfach viel zu oft gesehen hatte. Gut vorstellbar, dass mein Interresse an Elvis umso geringer war --> ich hatte nie seine Musik gehört, und herzlich wenige von ihm gehalten --> ich bin sogar gewillt zusagen, er war mir absolut egal.Doch vor etwa einem halben Jahr hatte ich im deutschen Fernsehen zufällig beim Zappen die letzten Minuten des 68er Comeback Specials erwischt und von diesen "Black-Leather-Sit-Down-Shows" Elementen war ich hin und weg das ich via Amazon heraus gefunden hatte, dass es mehr gibt als nur diese 60 Minuten Show.Als ich diesen absolut hammerschönen DIGIPACK mit allem Pi-Pa-Po dann in Händen hielt glaubte ich kaum meinen Augen --> das Gesamtpacket stimmte einfach 110%. Angefangen bei der super aufwändig gestallteten Verpackung (welche allein schon das Geld wert ist) bis hin zu den 3 alles umfassenden DVD's die vollgepackt sind mit allem was gefunden werden konnte. Zugegeben mein Interresse lag (und liegt immer noch) nur an der 1. DVD mit den beiden Black-Leather-Sit-Down-Shows die ich einfach nur perfekt finde --> er ist so hinreisend und witzig, so hatte ich ihn mir nie vorgestellt. Ich bin zwar immer noch kein Elvis - Elvis Fan aber ich gebe zu ich habe mich getäuscht und bin enorm froh, dass diese DVD's in meinem Besitz sind.

Saw this on T.V. when he made his comeback in 1968. Was thrilled then and am thrilled now. I was just 23 then and I am 70 now, but I still love Elvis. There has never been anyone like him before or since. He was the one and only original. Pure, raw, talent. Too bad he couldn't have dumped the Colonel along the way, as he would have had a much better career, and we all know he had acting talent, but the poor guy didn't have a chance with that parasite messing everything up for him. Thanks a lot.
