brought for year 10
My son watched this at the end of the summer holidays when he was supposed to have read the book. Don't judge - I was desperate! It's a strong and dramatic version of the well known novel. He was able to talk about the characters afterwards and I think it was worth getting - as a very visual person it helped him get the story secure in his mind before reading the book with everyone else in class.

Why dated now and difficult to relate too.
Extremely dated. But at the same time it does show you how much politer kids were back in the day. It’s difficult to relate too now and whilst the message is still relevant the later version is possibly better. A modern visceral version of this movie could be great, so long as no one tries to make it too acceptable.

This has to be the closest version to the book ...
This has to be the closest version to the book. As a GCSE English teacher, I know that my colleagues will only show this version to our pupils. Delivered when expected and packaged well.

A good adaptation of a classic novel
A great copy for teaching LOTF as its very true to the novel and we've yet to find one as accurate. Delivery was quick and disc works well. I wish someone would remake this though as it is a little slow going and the pupils don’t enjoy it as much as it’s black and white. A great novel and a great film plot though!

Followed to book
Delivered quickly . It’s a dated film in black and white, but I knew that. What I like about this film that it more or less stuck to the book. The later version in the 1990s , is very Americanised . I watched this later addition , and it didn’t follow the book , which annoyed me.

Great Film
I remember watching this at school, a plane crash's full of evacuee children during the war, two boys declare themselves leader, the children split up with different idea's of how to survive on the island

Classic film
Enough has been written over the years about this film. It is the original black and white version and sticks quite closely to the book written by William Golding making it suitable for the current GCSE English requirements in the UK. This in fact was the reason why I purchased it, rather than the new re-make. If you have a child reading the book for GCSE then I would recommend this DVD as an excellent companion that gives a visual memory fix to the contents of Golding's book.

The original film for Lord of the Flies
Peter Brooks adaptation of Golding's classic novel Lord of the Flies is by far the best, as more recent colour versions move away from the all-important story line. Brook's 1963 black & white version stays true to the plot and creates a real sense of fear; indeed the essential idea of the boys' behaviour being sinister comes across very well. The ominous wild-life sound effects, so painstakingly described in the novel are also recreated effectively, as is the choir-singing. Only downside is the annoying background 'trumpet' music. Great movie to use as consolidation for understanding the novel when teaching this at GCSE.

Excellent for low budget movie at the time.

The depths of human being
Excellent picture as it presents the plot in riveting scenes sticking very closely to the original text. It is shocking to see how close to animals we are. Very shocking.

As an antidote to the 1990 remake . . .
There is nothing like the real thing. We watched the 1990 version on instant video and thought it to be crap. I had enjoyed the book back in the 50s but had never seen the film, so comparing the "modern" version with my recollection of the book (and some knowledge about surviving in the woods) presented on stupid, ill-thought-out scene after another. I ordered the original immediately, delighted to see that it was directed by Peter Brook, one of the best directors going back then. This version did not disappoint: it was true to the Golding novel and true to the realities of survival (as well as to the realities of undisciplined mobs).

Take a good look into the mirror and at your neighbors
Read the book years ago. The movie does an excellent job of re-creating the authenticity of the book. We've been brought up to hide from our natures, only to make us even more so just beneath the surface. We see this brutal and honest film and want to think it's just a story, but it's not. It's raw and scary. It's probably too adult for the average viewer. We can't withstand that long, hard stare into the mirror. It's a gritty art film. This film was not meant to be an entertainment film but rather a think piece with a point. Highly recommended.

still good after all these years
My daughter had to read the book for school. So we got the movie to illustrate the book. It's good to have both, but the movie holds up after all these years. Beautifully filmed in black and white. The boys act natural and are not overtrained. There is some interesting added footage to the film with on the set technical innovations and unknown film of the boys arriving in Puerto Rico.We enjoyed watching this classic even if we saw it 30 years ago, it's a great addition to a classic movie library.

English teacher
I ordered the DVD for my high school students to watch after reading the novel. It was exactly what I expected--black and white but very true to the novel. The actors will never win an Academy Award, but the time spent watching the DVD was time well spent. There is a more recent version which was filmed in color, but the screen writers took many liberties with the original story.

Fly No Further
If you are looking for the definitive theatrical version of "Lord of the Flies", here it is. All essential thematic elements are included without laboring over miscellaneous detail. Sure, it could be longer to include every detail from the novel, but it loses nothing at its current length. I found it very useful as a follow up to classroom study, and my students adjusted well to the black and white presentation. You know it hits the mark when you need to pass out Kleenex, after Simon and Piggy's deaths, to a jaded bunch of ninth graders. Worth the investment!!

Criterion is out of sync
Criterion provides us with a clean transfer with some nice features, but why did they release it with an out-of-sync soundtrack?Enjoy this film classic if you can get past the intial distraction of what looks like bad lip-syncing.
