Identifying Wood: Accurate Results with Simple Tools

The level of detail in the book is excellent, the author goes from simple explanations (so you get a feel for what you're doing) to scientific analysis of a particular wood. Brilliant explanations, fantastic photographs & diagrams, top drawer explanation of the simple tools you need, and why. A truly brilliant book.If I lived in America, this book would have gotten 5 stars. Native species of U.K. is what I needed. Perhaps my bad for assuming the book covered more species, but in any case, the book has increased my understanding of many species of wood and how to identify them a hundredfold.A must for anyone who wants a far more in depth look at wood species, for whatever reason.

Excellent book! The best I've bought to help identify wood correctly and precisely. Very informative detailed information on wood anatomy with good explanations of all the "woody jargon". Was able to identify almost all the wood articles in my house, also to confirm my antique chest of drawers is really mahogany with oak drawer cases. I say almost all as the book covers native american woods and a good list of exotic hardwoods but not all the woods of the world! The analyses is concentrated mainly on end grain anatomy. This requires a very clean cut sample or you have to clean-up whatever you are looking at, say the end of a chair leg or the construction parts under a table. A good hand magnifier is also required (I use a LED lit 10x loupe). A must have if you want to correctly identify wood.

R.Bruce is the Guv'nor. His other book -'Understanding Wood' is most excellent. If you actually WANT to identify wood; read and be guided by what Mr Hoadley has to say.

An excellet book which enables you to be able to identify many of the world's trees and there uses.
