It's the Wild West, circa 1870. Samuel Alabaster, an affluent pioneer, ventures across the American frontier to marry the love of his life, Penelope. As his group traverses the west, the once-simple journey grows treacherous, blurring the lines between hero, villain and damsel.

The actors shine bright!
Your father’s western this is not. But if you’re in the mood for a quirky tale that relies more on the stellar performance of its actors rather than a stale plot we’ve all seen a 100 times; give this a try. Robert Pattinson is brilliant in his role as a besotted cowboy searching for his lost love and Mia Wiakowska as the ‘lost love’ is a hero to women everywhere who aren’t waiting around for a man to rescue them.

Damsel
This movie is a funny spin of the classic western. Rob Pattinson,(Twilight, Goodtime) plays the role of Samuel who travels to marry his true love, played by Mia Wasikowski. Tragically that doesn't happen. Most of the movie is funny and enjoyable to watch. The acting was good. Rob has a southern accent and sings "Honeybun" in this movie. This is a refreshing take on the western films which I thouroly enjoyed.I rated this movie 5 stars because it isn't the average western, which I like. The movie was well written, well directed, and well acted.I think the negative review was because the movie was not understood for it's purpose. It's not meant to be an average western story. There are numerous clues that support the idea of a fun western movie.

Goofy
I did enjoy this movie, it actually made me laugh quite a bit. But there were certain scenes that seemed as though they were slightly over the top as far as gory provoking and while these scenes seemed real to life, the rest of the movie wasn't congruent...like it switched up from being a disturbing scene to off the wall weird goofy humor and not sure the other is the actual opposite to each other, so it leaves the watcher feeling panged, disturbed, and just along for the ride.

Ok movie but poorly advertised
This was advertised as a Robert Pattinson movie. He was really a minor character. It is as if his name was thrown in to boost ticket sales. Rest of the movie was good.

just don't
All the funny parts are in the trailer. We were so disappointed. Super weird and not in a good way. We found it to be painful. Such a shame.

Not quite a Western, nor a Drama, nor a Comedy
This is one movie which is a bit wee off. The film is basically split into 2 equal parts: 1. With Pattinson and 2. With Wasikowska. Their acting performances are very good, though the Indigenous character steals the scenes, all 5 minutes or so of them with his deadpan attitude. The setting is 19th Century but the narrative is more like the 21st, which makes it again a bit wee off. The score, mostly in part one is at least twice as loud as the conversations, to the point of always lowering and upping the volume and detracted from the film. The scenery is the beautiful Pacific North West.Damsel is comedic without being funny. It did not convey to be a drama, though there are some dramatic scenes. The setting is Western frontier, but could have been anywhere else. The men are all portrayed as helpless idiots (which is the comedy part, kind of) but the woman, strong and willful but not played in a serious way, kind of. That's the only message conveyed and it took 2 hours to present it in a ridiculous manner. It is recommended, kind of.

Modern feminist message in camouflage of a Western-movie
(In the title, the „feminist message” hints to Ms. Wasikowska’s some earlier roles, which had similar content. See: the „Alice” movies, „Stoker”, „Jane Eyre”, etc.)I love this film so much! Filmed on classy way, in the real wilderness of Utah, which is truly eye-catching landscape, full of Birch trees – one of the most loved plant by me, alongside of Angel-Oak. In this wild-western enviroment we can see a very entertaining „girlpower” story, where the young female protagonist Penelope (Mia Wasikowska), is a real Western hero(ine)! She’s hard, brave, smart, very determined, and independent (from all men), and last but not least, irresistibly attractive. All men around her fell in love for her, but she doesn’t wanna be with them. She lives in the woods with a guy, named Anton Cornell, but her man killed by the coward Parson Henry (David Zellner), who is her „crazy-beau” groom (?) Samuel Alabaster’s (Robert Pattinson), paid companion. Samuel totally misunderstood his „bride’s” feelings, and came to make free her from that „unwanted” situation. The angry girl rapidly open fire on that guys – she often uses her gun! Then she demolish Samuel with her rage words. After that, the poor weak guy fled to suicide. Penelope make some cooling rampage, then she blows up her own house with dynamite, before she take hostage Parson Henry, who is too coward to confront with that hard and beautiful girl. She’s done there! Penelope, with Parson Henry, goes back through the wilderness, that the heroine makes a fresh start, somewhere else. On this long ride, they meet with Anton’s brother Rufus (Nathan Zellner), who wanna marry with his dead brother’s widow. But the girl doesn't accept it. Rufus became so angry by that rejection, but he dies when a Native American shoot-down him with arrow, that for save Penelope from the threatening guy.She was fed up from that men’s craziness, but the „savage” left with them all over the night. In the morning, they reveals, that „local guy” it was just a horse thief. Later the brave girl and her hostage arrive to the „city”, where bona fide Samuel’s endgame started. There Parson Henry get together his few bravery, and asks Penelope’s hand… but the girl rejected this loser at very rude way. Finally their ways separated apart…This (above) isn’t the whole story, of course. I don’t wrote here, about many funny situations („sitcom”), and scenes. Robert Pattinson – in the first 40 minutes of the movie (until he dies) - delivers superb acting, and some supporting actors are same so good – for example, appearing the composer/songwriter David Wingo in the role of „Barrel of Laughs”! Yet many more minor details – appearance the pony named „Butterscotch” as wedding present from Samuel to Penelope – helps to make this movie so entertaining. But for me, personally, Mia Wasikowska’s performance is the most important component. This Damsel goes on her own way, and she doesn’t need the crazy, dumb, coward men’s protection! Penelope easily overpower all guys whom she met, because she's braver, smarter, more independent than all weak males around her, who would cling on to her skirt. I think, this film – while so funny and entertaining – bears a very strong feminist message. To every young ladies – around 15-16 yo – should see this movie! But we all could learn from it.
