Upodate: So cute and very functional!
After I recvd this one, I asked my Korean friends to read the instruction for me. I am quite sure any items to be sold in the US, one needs to have instruction in English. This is not the case. Anyway, the instruction was to tell you to be careful in handling this pan - they will be come very hot during cooking.I used waffle mix and put some red bean paste (Oriental store) as fillings and make some fish cake, very cute. I also used raspberry and blueberry as alternatives. I am going to let my imagination juice flow and seek for some other fillings. (Chestnut paste, sesame paste, berries w/marmalade, custard cream........) Um..... they are so yum yum.I'd recommend using waffle mix rather than pancake mix - waffle mix gives you a much lighter and fluffier texture. However, if you'd like to have a fish with substance (smile), use pancake mix - the texture is much more heavy. Just like a pancake fish and fillings cannot be easily put into the fish.Do not put the fish maker on the BBQ, a regular stove top will do the job. Always heat up the maker first for a few minutes and spray with some PAM or spread a bit of butter inside - it prevents stickniess. Turn down the temperature to medium and pour some thin batter to coat the fish maker pan (one side only). Do not over fill. Put your fillings carefully into the center of the fish - they will sink into the batter or you can use a small spoon to help them sink. Pour in more batter to cover the fillings. Close it tight and turn it around to warm the other side. Monitor the temperature as it burns easily. After 2-3 minutes - voila - here comes 2 lovely fish with yummy fillings splashing onto your table. I make them on the weekends and my friends just love them. They are more popular than the English tea that I usually prepare. The little fish cake reminds me of my childhood when I spent my early life in Asia. They have so many types of interesting snacks on the streetside!1/24/2012 Update:I was told to add a few teaspoon of BEER into the batter and it works like magic! Same for tempura batter - adding BEER gives you the crispiness. Now the outer is crispy and the inner is as soft as mashmellow. Thank you for sharing the tips, Marsa.I also use my home made vanilla custard cream as fillings. I sprinkle powder sugar on my fish after it is toasted. 1/2 of the sugar is elminated in the batter and it is healthier. Well, at least my waistline appreciates it. :><:

Here, Fishy Fishy!
I'm having so much fun with this little iron. The fish are so darn cute! My 2-year-old granddaughter loves them with Nutella, hubby and I are enjoying them with almond paste inside. They are very easy to make with waffle batter. I have to thin down my waffle batter a bit so it goes into the mold better. On my glass-top stove, I heat one side on med-hi, turn it to heat the other side, add batter till it fills the mold and into the tails. Just a couple of small blobs of whatever filling you choose, then just a bit more batter over the top of the filling. By this time the batter you put in first should be getting a little bubbly. Close it up and cook for about 30 seconds, turn it over and cook again, then check the color. You may want to go back and forth a couple times to get a good color on them, as the details show up better that way. After some experimentation on your first batch, you will have it down pat. Also, I use a waffle batter with oil and butter in it, and have found that there is no need to grease the pan. They slide right out. As another reviewer said, if there is excess batter that squeezed out of the mold, never fear! Just cut it off with a pair of scissors. Super easy! The glass top gets a little marred in the process, but it buffs right out, and to me it is well worth the trouble. You won't regret this purchase. Everybody just loves these little fish!

Yummy little desert and fun to make
This is a great little desert and fun to make. Overall, a very nice product but a bit difficult to gauge the right temp initially on the stovetop. We have a smooth top range and after several trials the first time using, were able to perfect these little fish. We experimented with Nutella, chocolate chips and Jif chococolate cheesecake hazelnut spread as the filler and all turned out super tasty.

easy to use!
I've always loved eating these and wanted to try making my own after seeing many recipe videos and recipes online.I ordered this pan, and when I received it I was very happy with the size. Very compact so it doesn't take up a lot of space in my cupboard. You can use a taiyaki recipe, or even a thinner basic pancake recipe.I've done both recipes, and they turn out great! I put my stove on med/low or med (don't do it too high or it doesn't cook so great on the inside) and give it about 2-3 minutes on each side. The handles lock, so you can flip it over on the stove without it creating a mess. The cleanup is also really easy because the pan opens up fully.

This works really well and I actually made tayaki!
This was the coolest kitchen tool, it worked just like a waffle iron and made perfect tayaki even the first time!It was super easy to clean, you just rinse it with soapy water and wipe it off, and there weren't too many crevices to clean out.I would recommend that you use less batter and filling (I've always used red bean paste) than you would think, simply because it takes longer to cook it all the way through while keeping that golden brown color if you don't

70 year old Japanese dad approves
My Dad is a Japanese native who grew up in Japan and has been living in the US for almost 30 years. Fresh Taiyaki is impossible to come by where we live here in the US, so for Christmas I got him this maker. He was absolutely giddy and has been addicted to it since! If he gains 20 pounds this year, I know it'll be my fault. You can easily make delicious, fresh, warm Taiyaki with this device and a basic out-of-the-box waffle mix (yes there are better recipes from scratch, but we found the box recipe was good enough for us!). After a few practice batches, my dad was a pro. We use it on a glass-top stove and it works fine, especially if you follow the directions and pre-heat the pan on the stove.
