Toy Soldiers [DVD]

A fun over the top hostage rescue drama
A group of college friends on a boating holiday manage to shake off the skipper Sarge" (Jason Miller) who was hired to look after them, so they can fool around. When one of the group is injured after an accident on board they head to shore to seek medical assistance and are taken hostage by a group of revolutionaries who soon show they are willing to kill anyone who gets in their way .One of the group manages to escape and heads back home where she tries to help free her friends. After she is told the authorities will not help or negotiate with terrorists she persuades Sarge and Buck (Cleavon Little) to mount a rescue mission but rather than enrolling a dozen hardened ex-soldiers she gets half a dozen college friends to volunteer. Sarge reluctantly agrees to lead these "toy soldiers" into the jungle to help free their friends. It's enjoyable boys own stuff from hereon in as our small group of wannabe heroes flies in and the action ratchets up apace.Of course it will be knocked by some for being over the top but I liked it and found the gung-ho attitude in the last third quite endearing. It won't win any prizes but it passed a fun 80 or so minutes.Unfortunately the only extra is the "stills" section, a series of 10 small images.

TWO OF A KIND.
YOU GO TO THE CINEMA AND YOU SEE A LOT OF FILMS WITH TEENAGERS IN THE TITLE ROLE , SOME MAKE THE GRADE SOME DON'T. WELL I HAVE SEEN TWO VERSIONS OF THIS FILM AND I MUST ADMIT THEY WERE BOTH GOOD TO WATCH. GREAT ACTING AND VERY GOOD REALISM THE STORY IS LIKE ANY OTHER STORY IT STARTS WITH THE ENTHUSIASM OF SOME YOUNGSTERS WANTING TO DO THERE BIT BUT WITH LITTLE EXPERIENCE BUT AS THE FILM PROGRESSES THEY SOON FIND OUT THAT COMMON SENSE WILL SOON PREVAIL . THE ACTION SCENES ARE WELL DESIGNED AND THE ACTION WELL DESIGNED . IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO SEE THIS FILM YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. IF YOU COLLECT WAR FILMS GET THIS ONE .TAKE THE WORD OF THE OLD HIGH-FLIER.

Pat 'em down...
While on a vacation in Central America, Tim Robbins, Jason miller spent a lot of time drinking, whilst some American teenagers are kidnapped by terrorists.A rescue mission is sent after them, but they manage to escape and join up with a mercenary, because his movie career nosedived after Blazing Saddles to fight the terrorists. And Sean Astin and Lou Gossett Jr., are nowhere to be seen....So basically the film is bad. For most of it we have a fat bloke with a head injury, while the bearded terrorists try constantly to feel up the two pretty hostages, and this is nearly the whole of the second act. The rest of the second act is of Tim Robbins and the others argue with rich people and train.Oh and one of them gets randomly attacked on the beach, and then justifies her joining of the rescue team because she's just killed someone. Hilarious. Its by the numbers stuff, with poor one liners, and Jason Miller looking really embarrassed, and the rest of the cast either being really beautiful, or being the ugliest band of soldiers ever committed to celluloid. As an eighties slice of cheese, its Roquefort, nice to look at, but pungent, and only nice in small doses.Plus it taught me that as soon as someone dies, they either get covered in rats, or sent to an embassy in a bin.
