The Knitting Book

Knit know how
This book is in my local library. As it is often out on loan, I decided to buy a copy for myself. Now I don't have to go to the list as I'm awaiting the book to be returned.Considering the price of gasoline, I've saved enough money by having my own copy, that I could buy several dozen one pound skeins of yarn. It's a good reference book for any one who knits and wants to expand their knitting knowledge and skills.

"New" book? Looks used.
The content of the book is very good. Lots of information about knitting, yarn, etc. Just what I was looking for.I've had DK books before, and the binding has always been exceptional. However, I was disappointed in the condition of this book. (I just got the book today). The pages of the book are pulled away from the binding - like someone opened the book and bent back the covers - which is hard on a book. And the corners of the book are dented, like the book had been dropped. Don't know if the "condition" is due to the book being heavy (4.25 lbs) or not. I purchased a "New" book - not a "used" book - and paid "new" book prices. A credit/refund may be in order from Amazon. I haven't decided if I am going to send the book back yet or not. I've placed/received a number of orders from Amazon and have always been very pleased with my purchase. This time, not so much.UPDATE August 6, 2013. As I carefully look at the book, I am worried pages will start falling out. I feel the poor condition of the book greatly dimishes any enjoyment of it. So I've decided to return the book.UPDATE: Aaugust 8, 2013. Returned the book and requested a replacement. The new book came quickly, and in perfect condition! Amazon was on the ball with making sure this order was perfect! TWO THUMBS UP FOR AMAZON!

Maybe not for 60-somethings with vision problems
If you are over 60 or for anyone with vision problems even with glasses, this book - as beautiful as it is - may not be for you. I saw it at a local book store, was thrilled with the large clear pictures and ordered it on Amazon. As all the reviewers say this is a very well designed beautifully illustrated "knitting bible." DK publishing at its finest. Only problem is I can barely read it. The print is relatively small and, and more to the point, the ink is rather faint and fine. This seems to be a trend these days. Why? Is it cheaper? More "elegant"? Publishers: Young eyes who have no problem with this style of print, go to the Internet for knitting instruction. We older folks still love our books, but need just that little bit of extra help to make it worth our while. I assume you enlarged your beautiful pictures to compete with the Internet. Why did you then drop the ball with the inadequate printed text, particularly for an INSTRUCTIONAL book as opposed to one with patterns where you can copy and enlarge your specific pattern? I will keep the book, partly out of laziness and partly because everything else is so perfect, but next time, I don't know.

this is the best !
Despite the fact that my daughter-in-law wants to learn how to knit, and I want to teach her, our schedules just don't seem to mesh so this can happen. I found this book at our public library and was so impressed with the simplicity of the instructions and the clarity of the images, i felt this was the perfect solution. When time permits, she can learn on her own. This volume has both the very basic information (tools, casting on, knit and purl stitches) and also progressively more complex stitches, colorwork, shaping and so forth. Because this book is so extensive, I bought two copies, one for her and one for me. Even though I've been knitting for 37 years and design my own work, there is more to learn. If you only purchase one "how to learn to knit" book, this is the best one.

Great book!
I really love this book! Very descriptive, lots of photos and diagrams to let you read, see, and learn. Contains a nice stitch library section as well as a decent amount of patterns to try. An easier read than most knitting encyclopedias, and definitely more pictures to show you how something is done, which I find really helps me understand what I should be doing. The only caveat is that it is written in the British style of knitting, so if you are an American knitter be aware that some of the knitting terms as well as symbols for the pattern charts are different than the ones used in American knitting. Not a big deal, this is still a terrific book! As SOOO much cheaper here at Amazon than that other book seller, lol!

Excellent
I think this book is an excellent guide for all knitters, a beginner as well as an experienced knitter. Every page has large colour photographs which makes it easy to follow the written instructions - I love this book.I know my daughter in law wants to learn how to knit so I decided to take a chance and order The Knitting Book - when I received the book and went through the pages I was astonished - excellent layout, beautiful large pictures and instructions on every page, so she is going to get The Knitting Book for Christmas - then I ordered another one - to give to my youngest daughter for Christmas - now I want one for myself! One word describes this book for me - Excellent! Thank you Frederica Patmore and Vikki Haffenden.

Great photographs of how to do it.
I am impressed and glad I got this DK book. The many photos are great & easy to follow. This book is a great overview of knitting, tools, yarns, patterns, & how-to-do it with wonderful photos. I just started knitting & crochet & learning on the Internet flipping back & forth was too tough. I'm still mentally sharp & 71. I'll get the A to Z of Crochet, and A to Z of Knitting next.

Best Knitting Reference Book Ever
I have been an avid knitter for many years now, but there is always something new to learn and techniques to try. This book is the most comprehensive book I have found when needing to reference anything from a new cast-on method to reminding myself how to pick up a dropped stitch from several rows previous, or to try to add a little flair to an old pattern favorite. This book maybe pricey, but I think it is worth every penny I paid for it. I keep it close by, refer to it every day, and even look up answers for friends that call me with their knitting dilemmas. I truly enjoy everything about this book and will not need to purchase another knitting reference book ever.

patterns...they seem designed to make a competent knitter fail
It a good book. God price. The photos are lovely and c!ear. Great reference book for stitches and terminology but the patterns are TERRIBLE. They are all wrong. The baby hat is just about ok but the booties pattern and the jacket...oh dear. Even on the book illustration photograph the baby jacket looks ,well, wrong.

This book is full of useful information on how to get started in knitting
This book is full of useful information on how to get started in knitting, project ideas to keep you going and simple step by step explanations of the different types of yarn and stitches, what to use them for and how to do it. I like the layout, with a lot of glossy, high quality photographs that make this book accessible to both those who like text and imagery. The DK series has been consistently good in my experience and offers learning and support for people trying to start a new hobby/interest, or whatever it may be. The Knitting Book is no exception. A clear, and detailed guide on the craft of knitting. Would recommend for anyone interested in the hobby.

I'm really happy with my new knitting bible
I'm really happy with my new knitting bible, it has everything in it I need as a beginner knitter, has all of the basics and shows me clearly how to do all the things I need to do. It has patterns for some simple items like 'baby's first hat' and 'baby's cardigan' and various scarves with each pattern having a difficulty rating. It is full of inspiration and beautiful colour photos. There is a very good index which is very useful. It is a very big heavy book, you couldn't travel with it.

Great Reference Book!
This book is a brilliant book to have on the shelf the techniques are easy to follow. Recently having taken knitting back up after a gap it's been useful to refresh old techniques along with new ones. This book does have a few patterns and block designs which are useful. Would recommend to new and old knitters it is very useful and always by my chair
