Q: I usually wear a 5 or a 5.5 in an athletic shoe. Does this shoe ran large? It was suggested I order a 5.

It does run large and has a generous toe box. I normally wear a 7 with my own orthotic , but it was too big so I ended up with a 6 1/2. Definitely go with a 5. Love the shoe for hiking.

Q: Is the x-ultra-w mean wide? and if that's the case why do so many reviews say this if for narrow feet?

It is definitely not wide in my opinion
