TRADITIONALLY TANTALISING
Mma Ramotswe has travelled far from her humble beginnings and Stuart Brown has done the original narrative proud in his whimsical wandering way.As a chef in Botswana I snapped up the book for inspiration and for the expected wry comment on life here, and I have not been disappointed. Although the local 'cuisine' is fairly plain, it is indeed substantial and undemanding (unless you happen to be a member of the bovine crowd, who live well - to a point).Right of way belongs to livestock in Botswana and the languid pace described in the book(s) is redolent of reality indeed.I bought a few copies (3) which have winged their respective ways to exotic spaces like Australia.Reading or cooking, you get the vast sunsets, the whiff of the fire, and the winter bush smells as you trip through recipes and gastronomic admonitions. - not so sure of the doughnuts tho - not so traditional - must have arrived courtesy of an expat....Oh, and great evocative pics by the way....

Adored it!
The recipes are very good and unusual, especially the guava cake. Thanks to A. McCall Smith for allowing the author to use references in the book- they add a measure of enchantment to my daily cooking. Photographs are amazing.

A delightful book.
Mma Ramotswe's Cookbook is a thoughtful, delightful, body positive companion to the "Number One Ladies Detective Agency" series. Interspersed between the traditional recipes of Botswana is critique of Western beauty standards and ethnographic discussions of indiginous Botswanan ingredients. It contains not only recipes but quotes from the book and photography and paints the rich, textured culinary landscape of Mma Ramotswe.

Was surprised to find that this fruitcake is dry and nothing like our American fruitcake
My church is having a Christmas around the world event. I am presenting Botswana at Christmas. Plan to serve the persuasive fruitcake with red bush tea. Was surprised to find that this fruitcake is dry and nothing like our American fruitcake. Tastes great but will need the tea to wash it down!

The recipes are mostly easy to prepare
I ordered two of these so I could share one with a friend. The recipes are mostly easy to prepare, but mostly, the book expands on a favorite character: Mma Ramotswe, and others from the No. 1 Ladies Detective series. Both books were in the condition described and good.

Sweet and charming supplemental reading for fans and friends of Mma Ramotswe
Charming book which captures the spirit of Alexander McCall Smith's beloved Botswanan characters and the lovely, proud country in which they live. Not sure I'll ever use it as an actual cookbook (and truthfully, eating one mopane worm when I travelled in Botswana was enough to get it off my to-do list for a lifetime), but this book evoked wonderful memories. I plan to give copies of this book to several family members and friends who are also avid No.1 Ladies Detective Agency fans like me. Long live Mma Ramotswe!

Culinary adventure
I wasn't exactly sure what it would be like but it really complements the No1 Ladies Detective stories very well. So far I've only madeone recipe, Lemon and condensed milk biscuits. Forgot biscuits were cookies though, but everyone loved them. Lots of picturesand stories about Africa. I recommend it.

Great purchase
This book arrived on exactly the day I was told it would. It is in beautiful condition. The photography and the pages of information about Botswanan cuisine and culture make this a lovely book to read in its own right. As to be expected, some of the ingredients are somewhat difficult to source in the UK, and not all the recipes are easy or practical to follow in a British kitchen, but many are perfectly manageable, and I have tried a couple of the recipes with great success. It is also very true to the spirit of the Mma Ramotswe books, and highly enjoyable for anyone who is a fan, so all in all, I am extremely happy with my purchase.

A new slant on Ma Ramotswe and Botswana.
A cookery book with a difference. Ive tried the famous fruitcake and its very good. Readable and interesting even if you are not an enthusiastic cook.

Well researched and written.
Took this book to Botswana. It's incredibly accurate about Botswana cooking and culture. One to enjoy with a nice cup of rooibos tea.
