Animals really are better than humans!
I own "Unlikely Friends," and "Unlikely Loves," and now have the superb "Unlikely Heroes." For anyone who loves animals, these books are required reading! Again, a great entreé into the world of all animals. These books teach us humans just how much better the animals are than humans at kindness, love, and caring - qualities that most of today's humans seem to have lost somewhere. The photos in these books are superb, as are the stories that accompany them. I'll keep looking for the next volume in this extraordinary series!!!

PLEASANT HERO ANIMAL STORIES LACKING IN DEPTH
UNLIKELY HEROES tells the stories of 37 animal heroes. They can be mildly inspiring to animal lovers but each story is short and lacks depth and detail. There, of course, is great beauty in the many color pictures of sweet animals. It's a nice, slick book that just seems to be lacking and missing its potential. The writing is somewhat uninspired as the author Jennifer Holland tries to explain the animal heroes' actions. Was it simply instinct that compelled an animal to rescue a human or another animal or was something deeper at work? The stories are short so read one when you need a quick bit of joy or inspiration. Many of the stories you may recognize and others deserve to be shared. There is great beauty in this book yet it just seems to have missed its full potential. It's a pure and simple read. The little badges of information in each story--about a breed of animal or some tidbit--are an added plus to the book. Enjoy the book if only for the wonderful pictures.

Very light and fluffy, like a baby bunny.
Very light and fluffy, like a baby bunny. I was disappointed, hoping for something more substantive. I imagine parents could read this to their 7 year-olds, who would enjoy it. The author misses some opportunities to do some real educating of her readers. For instance, in one story, a dog's behavior alerts her owner to the possibility of a fire in the home. The owner opens the bedroom door, and subsequently escapes though the fire was nearly outside her door. This was an opportunity for the author to explain that if you suspect a fire, DON'T open the door, have another way out. She also points out that, historically, cats were outdoor animals. Fine, but in a world of cars, feline leukemia, cat-nappers, and people who enjoy catching and torturing animals, keeping cats indoors for their safety is a good idea.I feel I wasted my money. So disappointed.

Respect for all living things.
I have had great regard for the animal kingdom throughout my life. Taught by my mother that every animal feels pain and sadness the same as we do meant being gentle and loving to all in our care. This book illustrates this beautifully. I was particularly amazed about the mine detecting rats. How wonderful that someone picked up on that capability and built on it.

Beautiful book about animal heroes. Good for children as a learning tool and for adults too, who need to remember the true value of our 'furry friends'.

Fabulous Book
What a fabulous book. It truly is the perfect gift for an animal lover! The quality of the book is probably the best in my library of hundreds. Well worth the purchase, perhaps should come with complimentary tissues, small ones, the tears are mainly with joy.
