Cold Comfort Farm (Repackage)

A good copy
It was a good, clear copy of a favourite story. The presentation was almost entirely satisfactory. Before buying, I asked whether any of the women were anachronistically portrayed wearing trousers and received some replies, one of them helpful, thank you. Only for a few seconds does the heroine appear for a few seconds in tweed plus-twos, not enough to spoil my viewing.

Cold comfort with warmth and humour
Well done to Stella Gibbons for writing the book. Cold Comfort Farm on the screen is very entertaining - with some odd charcters and some not quite so odd.Kate Beckinsale is charming, young and has plans for the occupants of Cold Comfort. She is aided by her contacts in the big city to transform the lives of the farmhand, the forever pregnant young girl, the pixie-like daughter and various other members of the family to whom she is cousin...and last but not least her Aunt Ada Doom who has locked herself away in her bedroom since "seeing something nasty in the woodshed".Lovely cast includes Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley, Rufus Sewell, Freddie Jones and Ian Mckellen. Set in the 1930s, they lure you into their odd little world blending the well-to-do with rustic country-folk.It's quite intriguing and I think you will be compelled to see just how Kate as Flora Poste, manipulates her country relatives into their new lives.

Brilliant
This is an excellent film, playing out an imagined awful time in the deepest English countryside of the 30s, tongue in cheek throughout and very funny without being a straight comedy. Everything is first rate, great names, a big director and wonderful evocative sets, and all the time the script is played for real - however ridiculous and bizarre. After my previous copy was given away some years ago, I was then irritated to find that it had been discontinued and I couldn't replace it, even chasing up the BBC and the holder of the DVD rights to find when it would be reissued - "no plans". I was therefore delighted when the regular Amazon email of available DVDs brought it to my notice a few weeks ago as once again in stock - proof that Amazon's computer mailings can be very helpful indeed.

Pleasantly bizarre
OK, it's an old film and therefore quite dated in style and execution, but we enjoyed watching it. We bin many dvds - several never made it past 10 minutes viewing - but this will go into our collection to be watched again. It will never be a favourite, but is worth keeping.

Roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the .......er....
I haven't read the book but I have a feeling that, in less skilful hands, this film could have been a disaster. The characters are so close to being caricatures that it is like being in a time warp and you wonder why this delicately raised young lady doesn't leave the very next morning. However, with the self confidence of youth she rises above everything and sets about sorting out the family members one by one. She is like Jane Austen's Emma set down in a story by Dickens. I thoroughly enjoyed this film for the quality of the acting, which was to be expected just by looking at the cast list, but unless the director is equally skilled fine acting cannot overcome bad decisions. So, a good job all round.

Kate Beckinsale pre Hollywood!
I bought this to replace my old Video, and no doubt, in the future, will have to update it again. My reasons for doing so will be apparant to anyone who knows Jane Austen's Emma because you will understand the allusions, and parody, but even if you don't, this is first-class acting by a first-class cast. It is a production that can be enjoyed by young and old alike; my sulky, street-wise 14 year old niece from inner-city London who was determined not to watch a recommendation by her rural English teacher aunty, was immediately captivated. Other reviews will explain the story, and the cast speak for themselves; I will just add that it's delightfully humourous; elegant costumes are juxta-posed with farmyard earthiness, and it all trips along with light, sparkling ease.

Brilliant, funny, quirky...
This is a real gem and I find it gets funnier and more enjoyable each time I watch it. It is definitely one of my favourite movies. I had seen it on TV years ago and it was never repeated and I had been trying to get my own copy ever since but the 'regions' did not include Australia until now. Price was great although this was not a consideration as I had been trying to find this film on DVD for sometime.

Still the absolute wittiest of British humor!
The actors and characters, costumes, scenery, tongue in cheek humor...all so glorious. Even though I practically know it by heart, the excellence of British professionalism makes it come alive each time. I bought a copy for a friend because I cannot bear to part with mine lest something happen to it.

Good fun!
It's important to know that this is a send up of important British dramas based on the Bronte sisters books and other period pieces. If you try take this too seriously you'll miss the point.
