Q: Do you put the bamboo side down on the sand, or the cloth side?

Both sides are the same, go right on the sand, and when you roll up the mat, tap it on pavement, and the dry sand drops off. (one reason I love these) If the sand is damp, it will still tap off, just more tapping.

Q: Can you cut them and frame?

I have not tried to cut the mat, but most likely you could cut and frame it. They are durable but flexible. I bought them to put over my car windshield during winter to avoid scraping ice in the morning, which works perfectly, btw.

Q: Are the colored trims different? Are there choices?

With regard to the trim, I'm pretty sure you get what you get. Mine have royal blue trim, and I don't remember getting a choice of color.
