Maya! With this word of Hindu origin, Kashmir, the cook on the newly-berthed ship, delights in denouncing the triumph of mere semblance. The local prostitutes are dealers in false promises. Bella (Viviane Romance) is at times Marie the peasant girl for Jean, the boatswain, and at times Emma, the marchioness, for the Oceanic’s steward, played by Dalio. So when she believes that she has found in Jean the man who will love her for herself, Bella cannot elude her destiny: she must resign herself to offering to the men who pass through the port the illusion of living their dreams. Adapted from the play by Simon Gantillon, Raymond Bernard’s Maya brings together many great names, including Marcel Dalio, Georges Douking, Louis Seigner and the singer Fréhel, and of course Viviane Romance, who plays the lead role here and also produced the film.

Film superbe, mais image déformée !
C'est scandaleux, l'image est déformée !Alors que je trouve ce film de toute beauté, tout est gâché car les proportions ne sont pas respectées.En effet, même si cela est à peine perceptible, au lieu du rapport 1,33 original, l'image est légèrement étirée en hauteur et le rapport n'est plus que de 1,22 (mesuré sur ordinateur).J'ai dû galérer pour remettre ce film au format et retrouver les vraies proportions (rapport L/H, visages, cercles "ronds" et non plus "ovales").Pas de quoi être fier d'une restauration pareille...

Un film un peu décevant
Ce film, dont Viviane Romance qui l'a produit attendait beaucoup, n'a pas atteint son but. Et pourtant, il a été mis en scène par Raymond Bernard.
