This book was quoted 14 times during a two hour lecture for my MA in ELT & Applied Linguistics. I'm currently using it as a resource to write a linguistic analysis of different materials for upper-intermediate English language learners. If own this book you do not, a linguist you aren't.

Fantastic albeit a bit academic
This is a big book. Many pages, with quite a small font face. To be honest, I have only been reading it for a couple of weeks, but have already picked up a lot from it. It does indeed have lots of concrete, and proven, strategies for learning foreign vocabulary. It is also full of charts, statistics, and studies demonstrating what works in practices and what only sounds good in theory. Since I am only a part-time language learner, I have to admit the book is a bit dry and academic for me. Still, it is clearly well researched and far more comprehensive than any other books I have in the area. Recommended, if you can put in the many hours it takes to read it.
