Heavy Duty Plates
These wheel alignment plates by Kelly are definitely heavy duty with 1/8” thick steel. I have no issues with the plates and they are just as straight as my really expensive 4 foot level…I checked. The included tapes are ok but nothing great. The measuring tapes don’t work smoothly and feel like they won’t last long.

DIY tire alignment? Sure!
Tires are expensive. Even good used tires, offered by our local tire shop—are pricey. If you have an alignment issue, they wear unevenly, and you are off to buy a new tire. Again. If you take care of rotating your own tires, or do anything under the vehicle (suspension adjustment or repairs, etc) you can do an alignment using this tool while the tires are off. If you have to change a flat tire along the way, you might want to check the alignment as soon as possible, also, or if you regularly travel down washboard roads, checking the alignment, like checking the oil, on a regular basis is good preventative maintenance. Without this tool, you can still do a tire alignment, but it might not be as accurate. For example, using two grandchildren holding two tapes on the other side of the vehicle, you can leave the tires on and just use tire tread to align the front end. There are other MacGyver methods, also, using string, tape, paint, 2 x 4’s…. Don’t ask me how I know. But I honestly don’t think these can give you the accuracy you desire. This set is easy to use. It has slots for different lug bolt patterns. Basically, you remove the wheels, fasten the set to the bottom two bolts on each side of the vehicle, and use a level to make sure they are level. Then run a measuring tape (two are provided with this set!) from the front of one plate to the front of the one on the other side. Do the same with a ruler from the rear of the plate to the rear of the plate on the other side. Now—are your measurements the same? If the rear measurement is wider, your tires are “toeing in.” If the front measurement is wider, then you are “toeing out.” Now, while there are certain applications that you might desire this kind of alignment, (some racing cars are modified to toe in or out), for the most part you want both these measurements to be the same. So loosen the bolt on one side of the tie rod. Then wiggle the wheels until the measurements are equal. After you are satisfied that they are, tighten the bolt on the tie rod again. I’m not going to say that this will totally replace the need for taking a vehicle to a garage for a professional total four-wheel laser alignment from time to time; that is by far superior. But it can carry you over for a while until you can get there. The cost of a tire alignment can be anywhere from $90 to $300 in our area. So if this $43 tool saves you a couple alignments a year, it’s certainly earned its keep.

Good for the people who know how to use them
If you are not experienced in inspecting and repairing front suspensions, this is not for you. Take your car to a shop and don’t buy these. Are they gone? Okay. Old school and off-roaders, these are great for setting toe (and less work than the string method) I have a 30-year-old truck that shops cannot get the toe properly set. If you’re thinking about ordering these, you already know how to use them. I’m using these in place of my homemade angle iron set. These are stainless steel making them strong and rust resistant. I found these to be true in all directions. I was able to use them on my truck and my Volvo. The tape measures look cheap, but they work well. I had a little trouble keeping the measuring tapes in place, so I used magnets to secure them. Problem solved. I had to use them at an angle on the truck shown, so I used plastic clamps to keep the rotor from leveling back out.

Hubby loves them!
So I got these for my husband who is definitely a "car guy". He says these are awesome and work great. If you know how to use these, you want to get them.
