Q: can this be played as solitaire

Michael,Although not stated in the rules, I have seen it advocated for online and have also played it solitaire myself. There is no computer opponent, so one has to actually play both sides yourself. The three main reasons I've done this are 1) to become more familiar with the rules and to try a few strategies, 2)My spouse and kids aren't real keen on the game so when I didn't have time to visit another 'big' player I could play at home easily whenever I had spare time, 3) It is fun to play the game in general. The difficulty is that you see both sets of cards, you have to forget you know what cards/options the other 'player' has and go abstractly with the strategy you are trying to play (and go with the hand you see). Especially when I was first learning the game I kept a table setup in the basement with a scenario and then took turns whenever I had some extra time to practice the game. It is not as fun as playing the game with another good strategic player, but it was very helpful in getting up to speed on the rules and becoming more familiar with the flow of the play and to try some strategies. There are some on-line games one can play through memoir 44's website, but I had trouble setting it up on the computer - you can play a few games for free and then they charge after awhile (you get points for registering your game on their website and can use those points for free play).
