Columbo: The 1970s: Seasons 1-7

Fantastic Columbo on Blu-ray. It doesn’t get much better with than this.
The downside of this Blu-Ray set is that it’s a North American release on Region A playback only. Fortunately I have a multi region blu-ray player.Other than that it’s great to have these episodes on blu-ray. The picture quality is fabulous. Takes an initial mount of time to get used to the 4;3 aspect ratio.I have award 5 stars as I am so pleased to have this set on Blu-ray

At last
I've been waiting for for decades, of. Course there's a Japanese box set that's been around for years snag is that it's £300,So I'm ecstatic that it's been realeased, and I found out by chance, really pleased. Picture and sound. Fantastic

Better video quality than the Japanese Blu-ray boxset but missing a disc.
First thing to note this is region A (USA) not B (UK) so make sure you can play them. It also relates to the 2023 release - the 1970s Seasons 1-7.The best thing about them is the video quality which is better than the Japanese version by far. It's much sharper, cleaner and way more colourful. So what they are saying is true - it's taken from a brand new 4K capture.Box set received is missing Season 6, Disc 1. It instead incorrectly contains two copies of Season 7, Disc 1.

Excellent!!!
The Blu-ray disc version of this series has greatly improved sound and picture quality over the standard DVD disc version.

'Columbo: The 1970s.' Blu Ray Box Set - An OK But Ultimately Disappointing Release.
As a huge fan of both the seven original 1970s Seasons of 'Columbo.' and the later revival Series which began in 1989, I was very happy to read that Kino Lorber was going to release Lieutenant Columbo's 1970s cases on blu ray - remastered in 4K no less! However; although the vast majority of the episodes in this blu ray box set look and sound quite good (and some episodes look really good!), beware; calling it 'Remastered in 4K' is somewhat misleading.Whilst some episodes have a few excusable scratches, a bit of speckling and a few audio issues (all of which would have been easily repairable with modern digital tools), at least two episodes have moments of dreadful original Film element damage that are so bad that not repairing them is not just inexplicable, it's absolutely inexcusable. That, along with the very flimsy cardboard slip box, no episode titles printed on the discs and the fact that this release infamously has next to no on-disc Special Features, 'Columbo: The 1970s.' blu ray box set is a decidedly sub-par release from the usually very dependable Kino Lorber. However it does include a nice full colour booklet with images from the episodes and short synopses of all of the episodes. It's a real shame that Kino Lorber didn't get an extensive and complete 4K remaster of its own done for this iconic Series, and instead used NBC's less than optimal remasters. Why bother releasing a Series that's as iconic and well-loved the world over as 'Columbo.' is, and not pay for the most extensive 4K remaster that modern technology can achieve? 'Columbo.' deserves that and it can and should look much better on blu ray than it does on this release. Even these 1970s episodes can and should look pristine. So whilst I'm tempted to give this release 4 stars purely because I love the Series so much, because it holds so much nostalgic value for me and because the Series has been such a long time coming on blu ray, due to its occasionally very bad video and audio shortcomings I can't in all good conscience give it more than a middling 3 stars. However all that said; on the whole this blu ray box set from Kino Lorber is still the best way to watch the original Seasons of 'Columbo.'. So I'd still recommend it, but not altogether wholeheartedly.Hopefully one day another Film distribution company will give 'Columbo.' the proper extensive care and attention on blu ray that it deserves.

Good overall but there are issues
I've checked the whole box set and compared seasons 1 and 2 of the KL release vs the stand-alone blu-rays of seasons 1 and 2, and there are some points that Columbo fans might want to note:- the season 2 episode Greenhouse Jungle has a clear audio mastering fault, dialogue is heavily biased to the left channel. All other episodes are very good for audio. Hopefully KL will offer a disc replacement. Apart from Greenhouse Jungle, all season 2 episodes in the KL release are greatly improved on the stand-alone blu-ray.-season 1 is more complicated. The KL release is much better than the stand-alone blu-ray for the pilot episodes and all main season episodes through to Suitable For Framing. However, KL have botched the transfers for Lady in Waiting, Short Fuse and Blueprint for Murder. For these 3 episodes, the transfers on the stand-alone series 1 blu-ray are far superior to the new KL release.Quality on all other seasons is generally very good, though at times it's clear that KL have failed to do any scratch/speckle repair, so it's not as "re-mastered" as I'd have hoped.

Blu-Ray Disc case spine info
Kino Lorber’s five Blu-Ray case covers appear to be technically accurate, but I find the information that appears on the spines to be unhelpful. The Blu-Ray cases are prominently numbered 1 thru 5. That logic makes sense, but it also bucks against the ubiquitous trend of DVD and Blu-Ray series packaging, where each season of a series is in its own dedicated case. Since the number of episodes per season varied drastically for Columbo, that makes it an exception, which explains why Kino Lorber placed 7 seasons of discs into 5 Blu-Ray cases.Unfortunately, the helpful information on each Blu-Ray case cover is located on the back instead of the spine. Look for a small rectangle just above the Special Features list, to see which Pilot number, or Season number(s) and Episode numbers are located inside that particular Blu-Ray case.

does not play in 2 different region-free blu ray players in Australia
What is the ongoing point of this ridiculous war with region specific discs? I have 2 region free blu ray players and this won't play on either. It isnt released in Australia, so go figure.

In HD glory
Columbo is a wonderful series mystery series to watch. I highly recommend the blu-ray format if you're a big fan and want to watch the series in HD format. Picture looks really good, by 1970s standard.
