Doctor Who: The Collection Season 15 Blu-Ray (Limited Edition Packaging)

Slightly shaky season beautifully released
Season 15 of "Classic" Who is something of a curate's egg. New producer Graham Williams was tasked with lightening the show after the gothic darkness (and flat-out controversies) of the previous two seasons. The result was a set of some reasonably good scripts joined to entirely awful realisation. Partly for that reason, this isn't regarded as a complete success....One exception is the thoroughly excellent Horror of Fang Rock, absolutely the most everyone-dies story in all of classic Who. Beautifully mounted and excellently written, this is the standout story, it opens the season and then it's all downhill, sadly. I have a particular fondness for Image of the Fendahl, that wears its Kneale influences very much on its sleeve right up until the soul-sucking snakelets turn up. The other four stories are hugely hobbled by their relatively tiny budgets against their big ambitions -- good scripts overall but no money.Extras on this set (in addition to the existing ones ported over from the DVDs) are as always pretty good. Remastering throughout including some subtle removing of stray boom mikes, Matthew Sweet talks to Louise Jameson and Tom Baker, a new making-of for Fang Rock, a lovely documentary on Graham Williams and some new CGI for Fang Rock that I found frankly hilarious. [Edited to add -- much of the CGI is excellent, hiding the monster until the end and improving the transformation but I found the actual Rutan design in conversation with the Doctor weirdly funny]To finish up here, this is worth five stars as it's a good season well presented. By the time of season 17, it was all falling to bits but here ambition, charm and desperation carry you through and it's fun overall.

Fantastic season
Had been wondering when they were going to release this season on blu ray for a long time.Mainly for the story The Invisible Enemy which is one of my favorites and i am glad to see that there are lots of brilliant special features too.It is great to see Geoff Hinsliff in an earlier role in the following story before he was Don Brennan in Coronation Street.Overall very happy.

Disc one is defective -- *Update 28 March 2024*
I have multiple sets of this, and on each one regardless of the player I use or the television, disc 1 is defective. There are very significant artefacts produced when playing the disc, and this results in numerous scenes in which unwanted digital spots appear all over the place. I would certainly avoid buying this until they issue replacement discs. Based upon what they've done in the past with complaints, I'm not going to hold my breath that they will be doing that. So this will be the last collection purchase I make.*Update--28 March 2024* Some of us who emailed BBC customer support received messages indicating this issue is one of many issues stemming from a problem with the original camera negative from 1977. Accordingly, it would seem that earlier VHS and DVD releases did not really prominently display this kind of fault, due to the fact that they would display things at a lower resolution. Changing the output from 1080 to 720 or reducing the sharpness on a television and/or changing the output settings on the TV (say, cinema display rather than vivid or standard, etc.) may reduce or totally eliminate this issue. Consequently, I am revising my review from one star to five, as the overall disc content is quite amazing, and it would seem that there is probably nothing that could be done to fix a problem like this (and arguably, trying to fix something like this by some sort of digital filter or tweaking might introduce other artefacts into the mix.).

High quality blu ray. A series of variable quality.
I've just finished watching the series. I watched them when originally shown and many times since. The quality of writing and stories had started to deteriorate. Season 15 is indicative of this decline. There's a couple of low quality stories balanced by very high quality stories with little middle ground.Picture quality is very good. Especially when considering how they looked originally.I can't give a five star review given the uneven quality of the writing.Even so it's still highly recommended. But with a few caveats.

That's Rather Good!
I enjoyed this season even though it's not really my favourite but adding this one to my shelf was pretty satisfying as we get closer to having all of the seasons of Classic Who on Blu-ray. Lee Binding's artwork truly impresses, seamlessly bridging the past with the present of 2024.I did notice the moire patterns others have mentioned, though it does align with the BBC's explanation with the artifact issue was within the source material. To confirm this, I went back and looked at the 2005-06 issue of The 'Horror of Fang Rock' DVD and have provided screenshots that do confirm the BBC's answer. Regardless, an amazing boxset!
