Food stays decently cold in the lunchbox without ice packs. Just so long it's not in a super hot area, it a hot vehicle or direct sunlight.

Yes. Just be careful when you plug it in while the plastic is cold. The hot plate get very hot very fast and could Crack the plastic if it's still ice cold from the refrigerator.

Keep it out of the sun. Stays pretty cool until lunch time.
