Canaletto And The Art Of Venice [DVD]

One of the best features I have ever seen of Canaletto the artist, his life and his impact on the art of Venice as perceived by non Venetians. The c.90 minute programme is a fabulous blend of his paintings, how they were produced, descriptions of Venice and society in his time and highly complementary music from the period. This is also an excellent way to understand where he fitted in to the history of the British aristocracy, his hundreds of paintings having been purchased by anyone who mattered at the time and it is levelling to discover that he died virtually penniless despite having made other people vast fortunes from his work. Was it ever thus.

This was a Christmas present for my wife who loves Italy, Venice in particular and the Arts. The DVD was very thorough in its coverage of Canaletto and his contemporary artists, as well as his patronage and the historical background to Venice and gave close-up detailed authoritative analysis of many paintings- a brilliant DVD containing much more than I had anticipated, including Canaletto in London. Very good value.

As usual with Seventh Art this video is excellent.

Disappointed as I thought it was an exhibition with detailed look at a lot of his paintings. Probably my fault for not reading it correctly. It was interesting though.

Perhaps a little too many "talking heads", but when they concentrated on the actual paintings the film came alive. If you are a fan of Canaletto, it's worth seeing.

This is a very good production about a gorgeous painter!
