Silverline 766478 Extra Long Flat Bit 10 x 400 mm

I've bought many Silverline tools and generally they are up to expectations. I'm building a garden pond from green oak sleepers that are exceptionally hard to drill through and have gone through numerous twist drill bits and auger pits. I gave this a try and it managed to drill 12 holes up to 8 inches in depth. At the end of the work, the end of the drill has gone blue and lost its hardness - but this is probably as extreme a job as anything you'd ever want to do. Now the job is completed, I can just throw the drill away as it now cannot be used due to losing its hardness and blunting.It did the job that I needed and for the price, I'm not bothered about the short life. I've no idea what "sheerness" or "thickness" mean in the review catagories

Cabling for Ethernet/LAN retroactively in the domestic situation requires a. minimum disturbance of decor; b. minimum exposed cable; c. avoiding parallel runs with mains electric cable. This extra long flat bit, with an extension set made it possible to drop the cable to the connection points down the stud walls from the loft using the cordless drill. That was the easy bit. Fishing the cable needed a weighted string and endless patience cramped under the eaves as the various holes did not line up! Trial and error produced a result with a long, thin bolt tied at one end; dinking this up and down on the end of the string meant the tip of the bolt searched over a wider area of noggin and located the hole relatively quickly, which was necessary as Mrs. was trying to watch Holby in the other room. Bodge warning! The flats needed ground down to 6mm in order to fit the Am-Tech Flat Wood Bit Extension Bar Set (3 Pieces) whereupon a tight fit was obtained.

They did the job i bought them for but felt they were fairly blunt from the first cut. As long as your not buying expecting professional grade tools you'll be alright. I only used them on softwood, wouldn't expect much for hardwood.

What dislikes - non only used once and found it sat.

It's a drill bit. It's long. It's reasonably cheap. Not as sharp as the really expensive masonry bits so a bit slower but still plenty good enough for occasional DIY. After all how many times are you going to drill right through the walls in your house?

Purchased this as my drill bit was just a bit too short to get through a wall (wood / plaster board). Did the job in seconds. For the money, including delivery a complete bargain. Seems sharp enough to me, but once again, a bargain.
