Well I love it!
Wasn't sure about this, with the number of reviews from those who seemed to have trouble with it, but I figired I'd give it a go, for the price. The first surprise is how small the brick is that you receive, but I am a big fan of the small size and light weight for transporting something like this. Definitely a big tick in the sustainable box.Mine started to expand immediately with the water added, although I didn't just leave it alone. I chose to mix it as it went and broke up the large bits to expose as much as possible to the water while still warm. Didn't do it constantly, just now and then and it did seem to help. The entire pack rehydrated and mixed and when I did use it to repot small plants, it was absolutely fine.I like the consisitency of this when expanded and I like how well it seems to work in the pots. It holds water very well and I certainly seem to be able to water less often than with other composts I've used. I didn't try to measure exactly how many litres I ended up with - I don't measure such things - but I'm more than happy with the amount in the pack for the price. Excellent stuff, in my opinion and very, very pleased with it.

Excellent! Simple to soak and use, no mess during or after repotting and no fungus gnats!
This is the only compost I shall use indoors from now on. Lightweight, compact - comes in a bag ready to soak, no other container needed. Took a 1 litre jug, added 200mls boiling + 800mls cold water to it and then poured this into the compost bag x 3. Wait 5 minutes and then use. Absolutely no mess, no nasty smell and - best of all - no blasted fungus gnats which seem to be present in all 'normal' indoor composts now. Brilliant product.

Very good as a compost improver
I agree with other customers who say plants don't grow very well in this compost. HOWEVER... I have found that if you mix it 50:50 with your garden compost you get a fabulous potting compost. I sterilise the home produced compost via 4 hours in my slow cooker and then mix with the coconut coir. The result supports very high germination rates and strong growth subsequently. Really great water retention. This is my 3rd purchase and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Great cat litter substitute
My senior cat absolutely refuses to use his litter tray, but I keep him in overnight now for health reasons so this has caused a lot of toileting issues.Using this as a thick layer of top substrate with wood pellets underneath to absorb "smelly liquids" has helped because it mimics the outdoor "litter" he's become accustomed to, so he will use it, but he still meows incessantly for ages to go outside (which is not fun when trying to sleep) before he gives in when he needs the toilet.Once I've added water to expand the dry compacted brick (which is fascinating and fun) I leave the bag open for a few days and regularly mix it up to allow the compost to dry out a bit, so it isn't soaking wet when I add it to the litter tray. This helps to absorb moisture and smells, and my cat is more likely to use it when it's not clinging to his paws. The pellet cat litter at the bottom does crumble somewhat with the damp compost on top, but it makes all the litter softer, which my cat prefers.Once it's dried out a bit it's nice and crumbly, and spreads evenly in the litter tray. There aren't any big/ fibrous lumps or hard pieces in this potting compost, as there often is in commercially composted plant and vegetable matter, and this compost seems to also be free of those tiny white soil mites.

Small amount
If you only need a small amount of soil this is just the answer, also if you can’t carry the heavy ones you can buy. It was easy to make up. Did think when it was delivered surely that’s not my earth as it was so small and light.

Great idea-needs some improvements.
This is a brilliant idea and I definitely support it and I will use it. I imagine most people use this if they are in a flat without any outdoor space and or lots of stairs. As we are in that circumstance, this is ideal. I gave it 3 stars as there are just a few opportunities to make this perfectly suited for its purpose. The pros list. Very light and easy to transport. It’s completely compact and will fit on a shelf until rehydrated. So far seems to be of good quality soil as well. Now the cons list. The stuff has a very strong odour. It’s not a clean freshly tilled soil odour, either. It’s a pungent, pine, fertiliser and dirt smell. It’s dissipated some in a few days, but definitely still around. It’s not pleasant at all.The bag leaked a little. I anticipated this and put the bag in a shipping box lined with plastic before hydrating. It did not leak a lot for the amount of water I was adding, but would have been very disappointing if it was on a bare floor or carpet. As you are required to add several litres of water, the bag quality really needs work. The appeal of this is that it works for people who live in places with a lot of steps and/or do not have outdoor space. You could probably do with one less litre of water in the hydrating proces-especially for inside use. I followed the directions and the top portion of the bag was nicely separated, well hydrated and very easy to use. I fluffed the bag after waiting the requisite amount of time and it seemed a little too wet. As we got to the bottom of the bag the soil was/is water logged with standing water in the bottom of the bag. And when I used the soil at the bottom of the bag for repotting - I squeezed out some of the water- it really wasn’t necessary to have it that wet for inside use.
