Q: Does the slit go all the way up? Trying to get one to cover a water softener and the pipes are near the top.

The slit is about 12 inch from the bottom of the height.

Q: Does the slit have Velcro to close the opening tightly, and does the material fade ?

yes it does have a velcro closing, and it seems to close tightly. I ordered it in a biege color, so it doesn't seem to fade. I've had the cover for 2 years, and it's still great. I would get it again when the time comes. BTW-it's on all winter, but I live in San Diego, and don't have much of a winter, only some rain, if we're lucky.....;o)

Q: Can the 34" diameter cover work for a 20" diameter unit or is it too big?

They are really spacious and strong covers. It will work for a smaller unit, but will be big and hang down, but I think will still work for covering. You can probably tie around the bottom with a cord to seal them. We have them on our units which are 34 in and they fit well, very roomy, so they are a bit on the bigger size, not smaller. Great deal for money.
